Well, I'm starting, sorta. Got the hack wheel, hub, and stub axle in today. Did a rough drawing of the hack frame. HEAVILY influenced by Vernon,"AdventureSidecar," with a little "Horst Ulrick" and "HogWild" thrown in, and a bunch of wild Aussie's (Dave) I've been watching for a number of months. Maybe a twist or two of my own thrown in. Probably nothing original, and all a plagurism of one sort or another... So let it be said...if I'm using an idea of anyone's THANKS, beforehand. I ain't stealing nuttin', just propogating the sport. But we'll see how she shakes down in the next couple of months or so. Oh yeah, the 18" front wheel will be back about Wednesday, and I'll be picking up some steel this week too. So as soon as the debacle begins, I'll start throwing up some pics
ot the front hub/wheel assy back from Bob at RTR, http://www.rtrwheellacing.com/index.htm $200.00, NEW Excel 2.15 x 18 rim, NEW Buchanan spokes, and return shipping! All I did was send Bob my bare hub, and a week later, I'm hooked up...CHEAP! Bob will be getting all my wheel conversions... Mounted the Kenda270, 4:00 x 18 tire, and reinstalled evrything back on the DR. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use the 4:10 x 18 Kenda270. The 4:00 clears the fork gaiters on each side by 1/8th of an inch. I doubt the 4:10 would fit without removing the gaiters. Even with the 4:00, it is necessary to rotate the lower clamps at least 90 degrees for tire clearance.
Got the 18" front rim, and Kenda 4:00 x 18 tire all mounted up... 12" hack wheel, hub, and stub axle is in. Heim ends for hack to sub frame mounts(3/4") and left/right hand 5/8ths hardware for the adjustable links are here. Picked up some 1&1/4 x 1/8th wall square steel for the main frame, and a few odds and ends...not to mention the scrap rack...so we're about ready to start fabbing. Fact is, Dad was looking a little left out, so I gave him the honor of making the oilite bronze swing arm bushings. I made severral sets for Urals a while back, and really liked the result. But it was time consuming, and since Dad can still man a lathe, and read a mike... and wants to be a part of this project ....I put him to work.
Going to be following you on this one. Real interested to know how you go about it as I'm thinking about doing something similar.
No pics today, just a quickie update. Removed the exhaust system today, as it looks like it will be easier to fab the subframe, and custom fit the exhaust to it, rather than work around the exhaust. This will also give me the opportunity to do a cross-over exhaust, and put the weight on the chair side, along with a car battery.... HMMMMMM....didn't I just see this on a blue DRZ hack? Still undecided about the oil cooler, but it might get relocated too. Swing arm bushings are about done, but won't be pressed in, and have the final sizing reamed, until all welding is completed on the swing arm assembly. Pics tomorrow.
Here we go then! Carboard template, a couple of brackets, and the geginning of a subframe... Hmmmmmmmmmm....I ain't liking this..... Yeah...this is better. Under the frame, formed to match. Transitioning from square to round, single mid mount tacked in. Oil cooler DOES need to be relocated, but within the reach of all the stock lines. Just need a little room to access the front mount. Not bad for the first 4 hours....more tomorrow.
Very cool project! Talk about another way I could ride around with my girlfriend...Hmmm! We'll have to go racing around on some back roads when you get done. I'll want to see thar thing in action!
That's what I'm building her for....uhhhhhhhh....the Majic Monkee Man Map of Backroads, that is.....of course if your girl freind is cute....I guess I could be persuaded to take her along with .....oh...wait a minute.....you meant YOU, could take your girl freind for rides....I'm with you now... You know how us ole farts are, kinda slow on the uptake sometimes....LOL
