Broke out the new grips and installed them with some fast drying lacquer paint to set them and tightened up the levers. Figured I would include this pic. I have the pipe mounted and what is suprising is that you would think that they would have designed this pipe a little better. Got SPRINGS?
The last thing I did last night was pull out the heat gun and take the old stickers off the side panels. They came right off which was a real bonus. I have had stickers not want to come off before and in the time it takes you might as well buy new side panels. More to come.
Wow! Nice work!!! I am going to ship my YZ to you and pay you 39 six-packs of Anchor Steam to finish it up for me.
After going to my dad's house yesterday to gather up stuff that belongs to me...........it is a very long story and not for here. I got to work on my foot pegs. I disassembled them and gave them a coat of paint and let them sit over night. Put them on today along with the shifter and the mag cover.
I had some PE tubing laying around and plumbed up the carb overflow lines. If this stuff doesn't work I will get some colored plastic tubing from the local bike shop. They are cut the right length so that is a bonus.
I did some clean up around the back of my house and put away some stuff from last weekends camping. Then I decided to put the back brakes and lever together. The PO had stuffed a bolt through the front mount and I wanted a pin instead. I cut a bolt down and chucked it up in the lathe to make a cool pin. I could order it but it may take a week or so to get it. I love my little lathe. This is what I did last weekend camping. Race crew.
It took me a couple of hours to get the rear brakes set up. I couldn't remember how the PO had done it. Thanks to some pics I figured it out. I did have to put a return spring on the brake lever to make it all work. The cable set up was a period upgrade and if it doesn't work I will go with a rod.
During todays festivities I mounted the side panels. I had read about people painting side panels with Fusion paint and had to try it. My opinion is DON"T DO IT. It is totally ghetto so I will be buying new side panels. Here is the bike in the light. I have some more stuff to take care of. I hope to have this thing done it a couple of weeks. I really hate the front fender and it will go and be replaced with the correct one. More to come.
Wow, that is nice. I'd like to find one like what's behind the 400 and fix it up. Is it a 250? In the 80's?
Nope, it is even worse the other way. I bought it as advertised for the 76 YZ. It is for the earlier mx or whatever. Totally wrong shape and length.
It's a 1980 YZ 125. The last year of the air cooled bikes. I just picked it up and of course the motor is locked up. I am hoping it just has a stuck piston from water but it probably isn't.
It has been a few since I updated as nothing has really happened till yesterday. I finally received my plastic goodies from DC. The only thing I messed up on was I forgot to tell them to send the parts undrilled. It wasn't a big deal. I had to wollow out the mounting holes a little bit to get them to fit. Heres the stuff. Pulled out the decals and my decal installation kit. Squeegee, razor blade, heat gun, and some secret concotion to apply the decal. Not really secret, I had some stuff left over from a tinting project. You spray the surface down with a very good coat of fluid and squeegee the decal onto the number plate. Since it is not a flat surface you take the heat gun to places that are bubbling and it shrinks it and wipes out clean and smooth.
The side panels after drying and trimming for the mounting holes. They came out cool. It took a little bit of tweaking on the frame mounts to get them to line up properly. Next is the front fender. More to come soon.
I used the fender I hated, to drill the new one as it lined up perfectly with the DC fender. I mounted up the fender and of course it hits on the pipe when you cycle the turning radius. I did some ball park measurement and had to machine up a couple of spacers that are 0.140 thick. Installed.
All mounted and it misses the spring mount on the pipe. Life is good. It looks good and the bike is starting to have some character.
Today I spent my morning pressure washing the front of my house to get ready for paint next weekend. I aslo worked on a set of shocks for a customer, then I figured might as well screw around with the bike a little. Didn't really do much. Mounted the seat and set up an old DRA number plate with my buddies number on it and took the bike outside to look at it in the light. It is looking OK. This week should be working on new tires. I am also looking for a silencer for this bike. It needs to be an 1 1/4" inlet. If someone has something in aluminum or steel I could use it and cut it too whatever I need. More to come.
