KTM 990 bags are JUNK!

Ok, I don't mind spending $1,000 on 2 peices that cost $5.00 to make. People have to make money. Plus the latches, locks and metal to mount to the bike. Great, I get it but this is a F*ing adventure bike. So why sell us JUNK?

This piece just fell apart in my hand when I opened it one day.



I don't use these to often so when I took them out for this next trip. I find the rubber to keep water out is dry rotten. So being in Costa Rica with no parts accuse I made a new 1 from a tire tube.




Any suggestion for parts or just someone that make good quality products. Please Help. My next trip is big starting next week.

Man that sucks. I have really been trying to decide to get these or not. 1k and up is a lot for plastic bags.

Gobi sells the parts for repair that for cheap $30 I think.
As far as the rub strips on top just go get a car floor mat .
Yea $799 new but that's been well used?

Is that $30 for each lock? If that is I need to change 6 so they are keyed the same. So that is $180 for parts with no labor to drill all them out. Getting new rivets. When done I have the same junk that will break next year.

Shipping: ? I live in Costa Rica
Finding the right rivets: Half day driving to town and back.
Labor: 3 hour I Guess

End results: New Junk to break for another day.

I should just buy new shinny ones for all this work.

I know this won't help you prepare for your trip, but something to consider...

I got these surplus backpacks for $55 to the door. With some minor modifications, i was able to get them securely mounted to my SW Motech racks. The bags are far better than I expected with a metal reinforced attachment point. I do the alterations, I was considering making some sets for inmates. PM me if interested.

Yes, this is a known hassle but I think the latches are made to break away so that when you crash on the bags, you do not flip over.
As a backup I carry 1.5" wide heavy duty camping webbing straps with quick release buckles that can be cinched like this:

I had to change one of my latches, you can use you old barrel in the new latch so you don't have to change all of them. I forget how I did it, it was a few years ago but it wasn't that hard.

I'm glad that I bought Touratech aluminum hard bags. They're tough and I don't see any parts breaking or falling off of those.

Yes, they're a bit "square", but they work.

Go to Capitalcycle.com & peruse their Hepco & Becker parts. I found all the parts I needed to convert a Pelican case into a top box there, including a lock cylinder keyed to the ones I already have.

Don't know about international shipping, but it's a starting point.

You should be able buy them with the right key number and the tumblers come out your old locks really easy - you just need a small pocket knife or flat bladed screw driver.

My Gobis have held up really well. I like em. If you want cheap bulletproof paniers, mount two ammo cans. Its easy, cheap, and
you already have the racks.

When I travel with wife here is what I use Happy trail luggage. I use the rear box for my ice chest.

If I know I will be doing hard off road trails buy my self I use Wolfman luggage.:jose:

I should add I swapped my Gobi's out for Jeese's much better luggage, for me mostly in terms of where it puts the weight, a lot closer and lower on the bike along with the 5" that you can move it forward and back.

They are also are stronger and mount better to the bike and have more space (that means stuff out of top boxes and into the panniers - not more stuff). For around the same weight.

Edit: I have used the Jeese's to prop the bike up, while attached and have dropped it, all these would have busted the Gobi locks, didnt even leave a mark on the Jesse's.

No need to buy 6 locks! Buy one (or buy two and have a spare) and simply swap out the lock cylinder. Worst case, if the cylinder is broken, swap the pins from the old cylinder into the new one. Easy enough to do. Instructions here.

Oh the locks come with the rivets.

But just buy Jeese's.

Ditch the plastic crap and invest in some proper KTM branded / touratec manufactured aluminium hard cases.

These things are bulletproof and indestructible.

Expensive but you get what you pay for - Superb German engineered products made to last a lifetime.
