Any ideas? I've nearly finished overhauling my 78 R100. Mechanically it's sorted but cosmetically it's a little "challenged". The bikes got over 200,000 miles on it so I'm not inclined to spend much on the paint scheme. I've just painted the fairing satin black using a spray can. I'm not sure about it though. What would be a cool "cheap" colour for an old RT?
I personally love the pearl white on airheads, though you run the risk of being mistaken for a cop...
that orange "curry" or whatever is one of my favorite colors. Dont change it! Even shit original paint will look cooler than anything rattlecan, imo Isnt there a "british racing green"? I liked that color, too.
That's a great color. Like painting anything, quality comes from prep, you can actually get a very good quality paint job from a rattle can, of course it is very easy to make it terrible as well. The orange is a good color, not my favorite, but still a good color. If you aren't willing to put the time in to really make the paint look good (yes even with a rattle can) don't start painting.
The Bronze colour on it at the minutes been done with a spray can. It looks better on the picture than it does when you see it close up.
My /5 project in the garage came in a rattlecan French blue type color that was the same color as the blue in the BMW roundel on the tank. I intend on repainting the same blue color. Oh, and gold pinstripes.
I really like the stock color on my '78 R45. Nice shade of 'blend in brown'. The R80 with the hack is a reddish orange, not sure if that is stock or not, but it looks nice. Then there's is alwayts, shiney black like the C.
I've always dreamed of green. Almost did my GS in OD, but it just doesn't have the age to merit the color. THis is one of my favorite colors on a bike.
I like that green. This paint jobs just a temporary thing so I was looking to have some fun, the problem with the RT is there's so much bodywork only certain colours look right. Hopefully the bikes only going to exist with the spray can paint job for a couple of months while I sort my Mono G/s out.
I agree, the RT has a lot of surface area which makes it difficult. Perhaps a two tone - leave the rear fender and side covers flat black. Paint the lowers one color - something mild, maybe even flat or semigloss black - and then the rest your color of choice. It isn't that hard to do a nice rattle can job - even metallics and candy apple. Just because the bike has 200K doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to look good. I understand how you feel - that it's high miles and not worth much, so not worth spending the effort or expense. On the other side of the fence, I think the old girl is worth it and actually deserves it. I'm always impressed when I see a 200K mile bike that looks like new.
I hate to say it but the old girls getting to the stage where it's just becoming uneconomical to repair her. The original ATE front end and was replaced by a later Brembo one. The sliders from that have just been replaced because another British winter of heavy salt got to them, the fairings de-laminating in several places and I've had a couple of stress fractures on the frame. I've just rebuilt the gearbox. The heads are away having unleaded conversions, new valves and guides fitted. Apart from that the engines sweet. I recently picked up an 83 frame, swinging arm and stands for the equivalent of $50 I'm intending to rebuild that chassis and fit the engine, wheels and drive train from this bike into the later chassis. The plan is to make a really nice job of it and put together a tidy roadster. In the mean time she just needs to last a few months until I sort the Mono G/s out - The wheels on that have started to break up through fatigue. It's a young 20 years old with 110,000 on it so theres plenty of life left in it yet.
How 'bout red.. this was a rattle can job on my 82RS...is going to be redone this summer add a pinstripe as well.
I like the blue to match the color of the gas tank roundel. With gold pinstripes. I alway wanted a black one but got this instead and grew to really like the color. I'm doing a semi-restoration on the /5 and will repaint the same color.
