I got a nice package of pamplets , books and a good B.C. map. The map went with me.
I do this now for every state I plan to visit. It's all free to visitors.

I actually did that with city of Vancouver a few weeks ago, they said 3-5 weeks, so hopefully something will show up before I leave! worse case I think i'm going to try and pick up something when we get there.

What about for keeping a at&t iphone on while there? or is it better to just shut it off and hope for the best?

I had a Verizon phone with me. I'm pretty old school with the phone, i.e. it's to call out on. I kept it off most of the time to prevent roaming discharging the battery.
I did use it and Verizon called my wife to see if it had been stolen. They told her the charges were much higher to use the phone in Ca. She let me know and I made no more calls.
If you live and breathe by the phone , it will be a problem. as for me , no phone, no problem.
