Okay, if you'd like to get together and talk about how to take better photos (action, scenic, portrait, etc.), then we need to start working on a good day and time for everyone. I've seen some really good shots from our Mississippi folks already - can someone say trophy on the side of the hill. Hopefully we can also work some riding and food into the mix. :evil

(I have a few old 35MM cameras in my garage. Maybe you can tell me if they are worth anything, also!)

I got the wife a slr for Christmas. Turns out I actually got myself a slr for Christmas. She has not picked it up once. I've taken hundreds of shots just screwing around with it.

I'd love some pointers from somebody who has some experience.

Okay, now that I see there is some interest, I won't be able to do it on a weekend until after Feb. 14th 'cause I'm working weekends until then. But I think that a Saturday would be best because that's when the most people could be off and we'd be able to devote a larger amount of time to shooting and riding - then eating. So, I will say either the weekend of 20th or 27th weather permitting. A Sunday would also work on those weekends if that is more preferable. (I'd do it this Sunday but I've already committed to a dirt bike outing.) Obviously an SLR is going to be better for action type shots for a large number of reasons, but I think we can even help the point and shoot types with composition and the like. We need a good, photogenic location for the action shots. You know, like mud or water for people to fall in. So make suggestions. If someone wants to check out my photo website, this is the address:

I nominate Trophy for falling in the mud and such.

Yes, I shot everything on the site. And that's just a small fraction of everything I've done since 1980.

Not a bad idea at all. I won't call it a critique though, let's just call it encouragement.

I might be interested as well. I can steal the wife's SLR, and I have a nice P&S too. I've been wanting to start learning my way into amateur photography....Weekend would be key with my work schedule.

Reduck, those are some NICE shots...

Backwoods, yours ain't too shabby either!!!

I'd post some of mine, but the damn CF card they are on is dead, and we can't get the pics off :lol3

Hey, these are not bad at all. Good action in the tube and a nice in between moment at baseball. The thing that I see at first is the thing I see with a lot of people, with the exception of the rodeo shot, they all need to be shot closer (and I mean with a longer focal length not physical distance) to the subject. The baseball is good at the distance, but for maximum impact it should be cropped more squarish-vertical to get rid of the dead space, though it was not far off to begin with. Let me find some similar examples I've shot and post them to show you what I mean. The rodeo shot is similar to some I have shot before. You notice that there are two shadows. If you shot it wider, then cropped it where both shadows were in the frame, then it would take on a more graphically pleasing shape. Keep in mind that stuff like this is subjective and this is just my opinion. Someone else might not like those crops. Overall I think you have a good eye for interesting images.

Not always easy to get close to animals or action. That's why the longer optical zoom you can afford the better:
