Adventure Bike Off-Road Day, Los Angeles Area

I work for Aether Apparel and we're hosting an off-road day for adventure bike riders in LA on Sunday, August 17th. No fees, sales pitches, or any other corporate bullcrap, just a day of riding in the dirt.

We're putting on this ride with Overland Journal to celebrate their new Fall Issue, which features an article about our trip across Death Valley. So to celebrate the story's release, we're leading a group ride up to Rowher Flat OHV for a full-day of big bike trail-riding.

The Ride: We’ll start the day at AETHERhq where we’ll hand out free advance copies of the Fall Issue of Overland Journal. Coffee and donuts will be provided.

Riders will then depart along a specially curated route: up and over the Angeles Crest, along Soledad road, and past Vasquez Rocks, to a network of dirt trails in the hills above Santa Clarita. Starting at Rowher Flats OHV Area, we will explore some of the best fire roads and dirt trails in Southern California as we snake our way up into the mountains around Bouquet Canyon. Nothing too technical, but riders should have experience riding on dirt, gravel, light sand.

Around noon we will break for lunch on the trail. Riders should pack their own lunch ahead of time. We will bring along some water and supplies, but riders are responsible for feeding themselves. Afterwards, we’ll finish off the rest of the loop before heading back down the canyon and towards the city sometime in the late afternoon.

When: Sunday, August 17th 2014. Meet at 8am.

Where: AETHERhq (6100 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038)

RSVP to michael@aetherapparel.com So we can have enough free Overland copies and donuts for everyone!

We just did a scout run of the route yesterday, and we had a blast. Can't wait to lead a group out there!

Trail conditions: packed dirt, loose gravel, with sections of light sand. The route gets incrementally harder as it progresses, but there are various bail-out spot back down to the road. Should be a lot of fun for riders with a bit of dirt experience. Can be made even more challenging for advanced riders with the addition of some of off-shoot hillside spurs.

Knobby tires highly recommended.

Temperature was warmish, but once we get up on the ridge line a nice cross-breeze kept it reasonably cool.

Were you guys exiting Little Tujunga Canyon about 3:45 on Friday? White van honk/wave while you were stopped at Osborne and the 210.

Yeah, that was us. A BMW 1150 , KTM 119 and a Tiger 800XC... We were wondering who that was...

Hi, I'm super interested in this ride but have experience only riding fire roads. Approximately how many miles will be done on dirt?

From the start of HWY 2 I clocked a total of 161 miles roundtrip for the whole loop. I would estimate that of that loop 30-45 miles is fire road. There is some sand, some gravel and some rutted out switchbacks all with very little consequences of damage to yourself or your bike.

With that said we encourage everyone to ride their own ride and ride within their comfort level and skill set. You should also be self sufficient with the necessary tools and experience to keep your machine moving forward.

The weather is looking like it's going to be hot with a high of f97. Please bring lot's of water and pack a lunch with snacks.
