I've been looking hard, but not seen any word of a Dakar version yet.

I am hoping BMW will take the same approach that they did with the big GS, and shave off a serious amount of dead weight. With that cool F800 engine, good long travel suspension and 375 pounds, or less, dry weight the bike would be awesome IMHO.

If wishs were fishes, we would all cast nets.

Probably be a year or so,, but I'm sure it's in the works! I've never ridden a 650, but the twin 800 would interest me, big time!

I have heard from an undisclosed reliable source that it WILL happen.
First, they'll introduce the belt driver, sell a bunch of those, then we'll get the 800 dual sport.
Don't know when.

we'll wait and see, but I have to take my hat off to BMW for being unusually bold for them. Great job.

BMWF800.org

This is a new English language website devoted to the upcoming new F650 replacement, due in the USA for MY2007 at the earliest. Pics and the latest news and possible pricing.

http://bmwf800.org/

An official BMW spec sheet:
http://bmwf800.org/IMG/F800ST/F800STspecs.pdf

411 pounds (187 kg) dry weight for the ST - that is disappointing to me. I hope they cut 30 pounds or more off for the Dakar version.

I was looking for other hi-rez images of these new bikes. I found this post with links, but they were down when I tried. Maybe someone else will have better luck with these 2.5 MB images:

http://bmwf800.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45

I have just started reading the info at the site. I will post any interesting tidbits.

I just want to see what happens with it.

Do we really know that this is a replacement for the 650 single, not just another model?

A 800 twin wouldn't be in a Dakar model would it? Since it couldn't run in Dakar? Or would that be too technical for marcketing? I hope they don't attach the Dakar name to it in any way, in fact I wish BMW would totally drop the name Dakar and use Adventure. The twin size limit for dakar really pisses me off, I refussed to watch Dakar this year because of it.

James.

Yes.

This is IMHO the main reason BMW recently made a drastic MSRP price cut (US$1000+) on existing inventory of F650s. The F800 is definitely the next generation replacement.

I'm glad BMW is building a midsized bike, 800cc is about my favorite size. But, I can't imagine BMW producing an “off road” version of this twin. At best, BMW will produce what it has done in the past, and to their credit, sold very well; a heavy dual sport version. I say this because their dual sports that have sold so well, both the R's and F's have always been one of the heaviest in their respective classes.

It will be fun to watch

I thought you were joking, but you're not. I was looking forward to seeing how the R1200 HPN would perform against the toomer.
