Hokkaido - Sakhalinsk Ferry

This is for anyone who has an adventure including the Russia to Japan route via Sakhalin Island to Hokkaido on their bucket list.
At the recent WTN-J (World Travelers Network-Japan) meeting I was told by reliable sources that the company operating the ferry has stated that 2015 will be the last season this ferry will operate. It seems changes to laws governing the import of used cars from Japan to Russia have changed and as this trade made up the largest part of business for the ferry company it has had a severe negative impact on the viability of maintaining the service.
This is not absolutely definite but it probably should be considered for any future ride planning to that part of the world.
