Need Airhead Help!

Bought a 80 r65 sport yesterday, Blew it up today. Oil light was coming on at idle and made it home but now shes knocking. I can do the repairs myself but what do the parts cost to go thru a Airhead?

I bought the bike for the poor ride under $1000 and 1000 miles. Paid $800.00 dollars so there goes my $1000 dollar ride.

If I part it out how much can I get for the trans(worked great today for 25 miles) How much for the rear end assy. (also worked great for 25 miles) It also has snow flake rims what are they worth?

Or how about a used engine what do they cost.

The oil light coming on at idle is a symptom of the missing o-ring at the oil filter. It usually falls out and is easily missed. Try the IBMWR.org site for a used engine and I suspect that you will be able to turn one up. If you didn't score the journals on the crankshaft too badly, they can be cleaned up sometimes and new rod bearings fit. I was given an R100/7 several years ago with the same problem that you just described, cleaned the journals, refit the bearings, and a buddy of mine is still riding the bike now with no problems. Watch for signs of discoloration on the rods as that is due to severe overheating but a useable set of used rods shouldn't set you back too much. Good luck with your project.

Sorry to hear about your bike. It's really hard to say what the bike needs without looking in there. One of the neat things about the old airheads is that there are lots of parts, used and new around. The IBMWR site previously mentions is a great place to buy or sell. Airhead salvage in Texas is a great place for used parts. Probably the best place for info and advice from guys that work on these everyday is to get on the Airhead email list at http://www.airheads.org/

It's a great resource. Good luck. JT

Hey Artman, I live down in Lake of the Pines, and I'd be glad to lend any help that you might need in getting the thing fixed. Try the links on the Airheads page for used parts, or call Ozzie's BMW up in Chico. If you haven't yet subscribed to the Airheads mailin list, do so. It's at www.micapeak.com. Just look around the Mica Peak site and it'll lead to to the mailing lists and give you the subscription process. Lotsa good info and brainpower available there.

Look at the oil filter fitting first. Easy 10 minute job. Can be done beside the road. Would have saved 25 miles of ...

Are you sure that you blew that thing up? The generator light is easy to mistake for the oil light to those new to the airhead scene. Was there oil in it? How many miles? Are you sure its not the breather making that noise?
