Thanks
I recently bought a slightly used 06, so I am not much help on a brand new one. Unless you have to have a new one, you can probably find a pretty decent deal on a used one.

Unless you want to be a couple grand in the hole right off the bat - just get a lightly used one.

I got my 07 with 200 miles on it.. It looked like it rolled off a showroom floor. That was in 08.. I got it for ~$3,200.

My buddy bought an 09 new, with taxes, fees, APR, etc, he's paying about $7k for it and making monthly payments.

I got my '09 new in '10 for around $4200 out the door...this is in northern MN. We don't have multiple dealers to play off of, though. In an area with more dealers, you may have better luck with getting one to sweeten the pot.

Our local dealer shows a new '09 for $4K, and a new '12 for $5K MSRP

these later models are a bit different from my '07,
has anyone ridden both?
fuel injection?
different brakes
different suspension
has anyone ridden both and compared?
what is EFI like to ride?
how much power?
6th gear on my bike is overdrive, and 5th is probably the last
gear you can pull much power
unless on the highway. being closer together might be better
for the engine

big sprocket

Not sure if this has been covered yet, but have to ask. I went to a buddies garage last night to put my new off road tires on the KLX250, and while I was there he took off the 42 tooth stock sprocket and replaced it with a 49 tooth sprocket he had lying around. The front is stock. Has anyone riddin' with a similar set up? It plan to use it off road on trails and in the woods, I am even going to turn the tag in (i think). Let me know what ya think, havent put the chain on yet, i have to take a few links off of another to get around that beast of a sprocket.

I've run a 49 rear with 13, 14 and 15 up front for the past year. I've really enjoyed this setup. A 13/49 combination is LOW and lets me climb the steep and gnarly stuff at a safe, comfortable "mule" pace. Serious grunt. But it does keep upper speeds limited to around 60ish without just wringing it out. The 15/49 is really close to a 13/42 (one lower up front and stock rear) that so many riders go to and rave about. I needed a longer chain, but this longer chain works fine for all 13, 14 & 15.

I'm going to a 351 now, which brings more torque on the low rpm. Many guys up gear after the 351, so I'm putting on a 45 tooth rear and will run the 13-15 setup as needed. Are you interested in a 49 tooth rear sprocket, used one year (about 3500 miles)? See it here.

Thanks for the replies about the prices.

I don't mind buying a used one, I am searching craiglslist for the past one month, none are on the market so far.

I was surprised at the quoted prices, I expected OTD price to be near the MSRP not $1500 more.

I checked the costco member pricing as well. The member pricing is about 5.4K OTD. The dealers didn't even try to make a sale. Wonder if the bike is really selling well and dealers are not willing to negotiate.

Thanks

I have ridden both and the differences are almost imperceivable. The jump from 5th to 6th is wider on the older bike but I can pull up long hills in 6 th on my 09. So it is probably more usefull.
The suspension in stock form leaves something to be desired on either one. Longer stroke does not necessarily mean better in the dirt.
I would say that if you wait and look around for a while you should find one for 3 to 4 K and you would be very happy with either one.
Brakes work the same.

erminman: i believe there is no point gearing this bike too low
you need to capture the power at 7-9000 rpm, over-rev to around 10,000
if you gear it too low the bike will rev too much with no power or torque
others WILL disagree.
(the bike may feel better off low revs but is useless up high, and you have to change
gears too much, top speed reduced too much aswell)

here are the combinations i have tried with 50,000kms+ riding:

sprocket value comment
combo

14/50 3.571 way too low

14/47 3.35
15/50 3.33 still too low
14/46 3.28 may be okay for bone stock bike, no mods

13/42 3.23
14/45 3.21 good for stock bike (with carb mods)

13/41 3.15 probably right for modded bike with more power
14/44 3.14 - more torque - good for top speed

13/40 3.07
14/43 3.07 good for top speed (highway)

14/42 3.00 stock ratio too high

this is a rough guide, try for yourself

I don't know if your just checking Craigslist for your area or not, but I use this site to search a couple hundred mile radius from me when looking for a bike. You can tell it how far away you are willing to travel.

http://www.searchtempest.com/

Also a little tip if your not doing so already, you have to try different search words. For example a search for KLX250 and a search for KLX 250 will probably bring up different results.
