I am using it around town in my top pocket of my jacket with the earphone plug. Works well enough to no longer need the melways. Out in the bush it suffers from losing GPS signal while on the move, and even travelling fast on tree lined tar can drop the signal. In open spaces it works ok. The Tom Tom maps are better than I expected, covering forest firetrails, albeit they are not named, but it can get you back to a main town. I'm trying oziexplorer now to allow setting a route. I will probably replace it with something using the Sirf 3 chipset (garmin Zumo) soon.

I have just bought the Tomtom rider for my SE and haven't had the chance to try it out yet. Glad to hear the maps aren't too bad. Anybody know what other options besides Tomtom there are for maps for this unit? |

HP IPaq RX5965
Hi Guys, I'm in NSW Australia & I use an HP Ipaq RX5965 on my BMW F650GS in the tank bag. It has TOMTOM on it which I use around town & Highway but I have also installed Oziexplorer, works great. I can have both running at the same time if I want.
The tomtom tells me where to go via voice & earpiece and the oziexplorer tracks were I'm going. Ozi is great off road as it tracks on any map downloaded from the PC, if I get lost I can just backtrack. Only problem is on longer trips I need to plug in the power via USB connector. Not a problem on the bike but the connector on the PDA is a bit flimsy. I down load Australian maps from Auslig https://www.ga.gov.au/products/servl...EFINE_PRODUCTS and load them on the PC and then convert them to the PDA. Works a treat! Sometimes a better scaled map would be great but hey, there free!!!

I'm another fan of the PDA theory. I pick up my Asus A639 next week with built in GPS. It has a little fold out panel for better GPS reception and also has an external GPS port for attaching an extra airel if required.
Has 1 gig of memory built in, bluetooth 2.0, wifi, sunlight readable display.. Anyway, once i get it, I'll see if it does everything its meant too. |

Im using a hw6515 with Tomtom in the car, I was probably going to get an Asus, but a friend offered this to me really cheap.
Its not a bad unit, gps signal has been fine so far. The screen is a little smaller than other units due to the keyboard. I assume you went with this as it can be used as a phone as well? Im not actually using mine as a phone, so its probably not the best suited to me but for what I paid for it its good. Ive played around with oziexplorer a bit using topographical maps and seems to work well with that. check out gpsaustralia.net for further info on gps mapping in australia, theres heaps of resources (free maps) to use with oziexplorer on there. |

I use the HP6515 as well. I leave it in the tankbag due to the vibes and it does need to be powered for longer trips as it goes through the battery pretty quick in GPS mode. Works well in the car.
I keep looking at the Nav III's, quests, magellans etc. but like my HP as it suits my needs. With the volume on full you can still hear it without earphones over the engine. I've just put a Staintune pipe on the R12GS so maybe now I won't be able to hear it. I wouldn't mount this unit in a fixed mount to the bike though as I'm sure that would destroy it. The unit also being a phone is pretty handy.
