I use 2.5 quarts. The bike doesn't know it's slightly overfilled and I keep the extra 1/2 quart for top off's.

How many quarts do you all typically use when refilling?

I just changed the oil for the first time on my 2002 XRL (bought it a week ago). Some online research recommended 2 quarts. I put in 2 quarts, cranked/warmed it up to let the oil circulate, checked the dipstick... It showed it being really low. Is 2 quarts not the recommended amount?

Also... I used Honda GN4 10w-40 oil. I figured this first time I'd use the recommended oil from Honda... What do you all use? What's cheaper but better performing?

Thanks!
My standard response to any oil thread. Use Baby Seal Oil.

It is the tears of their mothers that makes it soooo sweet.

An oil cooler is a mod that protects your investment. Money well spent.

If you just ride it get a gauge(they're cheap) so you know when it's time for a cool down.

Big fin heads are cool too!!!

Mental Guru,

Check your PM's, I sent you one a while ago.

Thanks,
Eric

A little late to ask now but...if you have a UNI filter why not bring the UNI brand cleaner and oil on the trip?

Having radiators (or not) isn't the issue. My KLX400 only ate coolant once in the 3+ years I had it and that was when I rode it in a small town parade with my moto friends. That was a idle in place 2 minutes, then roll forward 30' affair. I rode lots of ST with the 400 and never had a problem. I swapped because the XRL has a more flexible gearing for both trail and street and a more comfy seat than the KLX. Two things I do miss about the KLX was the instant throttle response from the FACTORY installed pumper carb and the 30 less pounds it weighed when the bike decides to take a dirt nap.

Yep... Your experience may be different. Different trails, different riders, different bikes, etc.

So I finished up my bike maintenance day down here in Puebla. Dried my airfilter out on one of the hand blowers in a McDonalds bathroom,

Oiled the filter in street, and changed my oil in a Honda dealership whose owners generously allowed me to use their shop and tools. Without changing the filter, my bike took two quarts on the dot. Actually, it may be about 5mm over the dot, but that's close enough for me.

So far, the cheapest 10W-40 Synthetic JASO rated oil I've been able to find down here is the Honda HP4 at 150 pesos (about $11.50) a quart. What does everyone think about this stuff? The only other options were Motul and Shell Advance, but they were both about 100 pesos more expensive...

Also, a big thanks to Spud for explaining the more salient points on No-Toil. I was able to find the green stuff at the same shop where I bought my oil!

And finally, one more question: I was oiling my chain yesterday when I noticed that I was missing o-rings on two of the links!

How big of an issue is this? I have a spare chain with me, and I can slap it on whenever; is this something that needs to be done now? Or can it wait a few hundred miles? Forgive my ignorance, I really don't know!
