Yeah, now that I see a side view I'm thinking no myself. I'll try and find my post from back in November(?). I believe the fairing was more than $100 and shipping was $25+.

I'd say you are running rich, I have that same setup (except for the insert removed) in my 04 at 500' to 2000' getting an average of 44 mpg.

I'm running a big gun silencer with the (tiny) quiet insert and spark arrestor screen installed. It had a bit of a bark before I installed the powerbomb header, but the header really took the bite out of the big gun.
On my test ride I didn't even wear earplugs, and the sound was fine all the way up to 85 or so. The powerbomb really did make a big difference in the sound....a nice side benefit to go along with the extra power and quicker revving

Muffler porn right here baby

Excuse the camera flash/nasty reflection between the FMF sticker and endcap

Now........the story...gotta be a good story to go with a kickass muffler

This exhaust has been on ebay for about 2 years,,no kidding..........

I got fed up with seeing it there for this long,,at that rediculous price..seller was listing it at 369 bucks

So i emailed him.i asked him if he was serious about selling it...because you can buy a new Q4 on ebay right now for 286 shipped.

I told him this isn`t a collectable,no one is ever going to buy it,,proof in point is it`s been listed on ebay for 2 years for petes sake..i said lower the price and get rid of it,geeeezzzzzzzzz

He replies back that he has 264.12 into it,,would i pay that..

f no i said......

I said i wasn`t going to pay more than 230 shipped..i realize it`s new,,but it`s still not worth the newer model pricing..

I really didn`t actually want it.......i was just tired of looking at it and was sturring the pot for fun....

So.............now i have three mufflers,,the OE..an original FMF "Q" muffler...and this new one...guess i`m gonna have to get rid of the older version, this is pretty cool looking..

Or i could build a cool shelf and hang the sucker on the wall

This bike is like the cute blonde at the bar, always managing to get more money out of you lol. I've been contemplating a carb upgrade, but have decided against it because I didn't think I needed it.......but I said the same thing about the big gun silencer, the powerbomb exhaust, the fork brace, some new plastic parts etc.

What is it with these bikes and the way they suck the money out of you. I almost ordered a set of those Easton bars with risers for a killer sale price the other day.....even tho my stock bars are straight, looking good and working fine
Sure glad me and the wife keep our finances seperate

S T Yes. The choke will have more effect at lesser throttle and on top you could try full choke.

I looked it up once, a few years back, but can't remember what I found out about it. I do remember seeing a pic on one on a DRZ too.
That looks like mine.

Thanks....I'm going to start checking my mileage, try the choke test to see if I'm lean, and pull the plug after a couple rides to see how it looks.

I was concerned that with as much as I had to adjust the mixture screw for the cut open airbox and powerbomb header, I might be running lean now...I know these air-cooled xr's don't like lean much Its running great tho, and didn't seem the least bit hot on my test run, and I was running it pretty hard.

I don't mind a little rich for peace of mind, as long as the mileage isn't terrible, and I'm not carboning up the piston and head

Thanks, I'll give that a try on my next ride...should tell me quite abit
Even before the cut airbox and powerbomb tho, my silencer tip wasn't really black or sooty

I'll share the info as I go, so it can help future modders down the road

The dark side of jetting....Dave you fun sucker

At least you put together some awesome mods that me and most everyone else here seems to be running. Now just tell me the exact jets and needle adjustment I need for my elevation and I'll be a happy camper

Thanks for the feedback Fritz
I was wanting to know what jetting guys with mods similar to mine were running at sea level, or even my elevation, so I could use the correction charts to get my jetting close to what it should be.....but according to Dave its a black art that takes lots of experimentation.....he says if its running good leave it alone.

Mine IS running good now, I just wanted to be sure I was getting the most out of it I could. But honestly I'm not going to fiddle with it a bunch to make it perfect, I don't have the time. I AM going to watch my mileage tho like you said, and see what I'm getting, if its too low I'll take corrective measures

The 58/155 jetting I'm running now is the same jetting the po installed with Dave's mods, when the bike had the stock header and muffler, with just the muffler insert removed, uni filter, desnorkeled air box and desmogged.

I guess I'll just watch my mileage and do a plug check after a couple rides and see how it goes
I'm at 3500 feet and often ride in Colorado at 6000 to 10,000 feet (unless you count the trip to the top of Mount Evans at 12,00 feet). I'm running 58/155 and getting on average 41 mpg. Now that has been with different gearing and several jaunts at 65 to 70 mph. I was having starting issues at higher elevation and thought maybe my pilot jet was too rich. So I dropped to a 55 pilot. I got a lot of popping during deceleration at 3500 feet and a little at 6000 feet. My starting issue ended up being the CDI solder joints. With the 55 pilot I felt I was running a little warmer than I should have been even after adding a XR400 oil cooler. I put the 58 back in and the popping stopped. I haven't been able to check the temp difference as it cooled off quite a bit after I changed back. I changed the plug this winter and it was a little black so it had been running rich. But then again, I had been at higher elevations. I may be a bit lean on the main for the 3500 but it runs well at higher speeds at the elevations I ride. I do have some bog off of the low end until it gets up to operating temperature. All this to say, even though they are the same motor with close to the same mods ( I don't have the power bomb), they may still run different. What other folks are running will get you in the neighborhood. From there you can fine tune.
