bad gas mileage

my bike has been getting terrible gas mileage. i started noticing it about 6 months ago. i have a 5.8 gal tank and every time i would fill up i would lose 5 to 10 mpg. it could get 55 mpg pretty easy but now im down to about 35. doesnt seem like it has lost any power but top speed has went from 95 to 75.

trying to fix it i have:
replaced the spark plug (didnt help)
checked valves (still in spec, no changes since initial adjustment)
changed oil (doesnt seem to make a difference. i use ams oil or rotella synthetic)
replaced chain and sprockets (gained 5-10 mph, now will do almost 85)
disassembled carb (clean as a whistle, slide free, float not sticking as far as i can tell. no visible wear. it doesnt seem like anything is flowing out of the over flow tube)
checked wheels for free spinning (no problems, brakes not dragging)
played with tire pressures (still nuthin)
removed exhaust baffle and ground away the welds on inside of header (ran out of ideas so now im just screwing around. gained some power but now the bike sounds pretty dumb, btw.)
may run a compession test some time but im sure its ok

it is a 2012 with 13,500 miles on it.
daves mods with 55/158 jets and 0.20 shim
uni filter with snorkle removed
smog block off
stock gearing

whats going on???

MYFriend. You have a air leak. It was cause by your thorthol cables being to tight. I had the same problem it took me months to figure it out. Here look at this picture to see where the leak is coming from. Its leaking from the little circlip under where the chock cable bolts into the carb. Turn on the bike and spray some carb cleaner or break cleaner at the circlip. If the rpm changes is leaking from the shaft at that spot. The bad news is the fix is going to be a new carb.

My thoughts exactly! I've been wanting to build this bike for a few years now and have thought a lot about how to do it.
I have built several BMW GS's and have always used the black/white theme , so I guess it's now my trademark of sorts.
Got the Warp 9 wheels in ( all black with stainless spokes). First purchase from them and they look good. Was contemplating Excel rims with Talon hubs laced by Woody's but recently saw some Warp 9 wheels and gave them a call.Very good pricing , so I went with those.
Parts are coming in and I'm getting everything laid out.
I will be sending the motor to CW for the 711 motor kit.
Here's the motor list
CW rod and piston
Ported and Polished
Big fin cylinder
Black powder coat
2nd and fifth gear change
Stainless steel valves
Hardened rockers
Oil pump modification
New cam etc., etc, etc,
Motor build is supposed to be about 6-8 weeks so I'll be working on the frame and suspension.
I will start with photos next week and will try to keep everyone posted on the build.

You've probably come to terms with the bike and don't baby it like you did when it was new. Your mileage is about what I get - and always got. Can't talk abou the top speed, but I'm not comfortable going much over 75 on mine either.
