Good LORD! I have to vent. Thank you all for your replies. I just spent the last 10 minutes writing an exhaustive reply to all of you offering advice and asking more questions and my browser crashes. I have given Safari enough chances to last a life time, back to Chrome and this time for good!

Later tonight I'll get back to it and write you guys. thanks again for all your responses!

Main questions following your responses...

Has anyone compared same side luggage with and without side racks? How important are they? Is their sole purpose to just hold down things tighter? and keep away from the tire?

Need all removable luggage, so I will likely do this up top for my pelican which is holding a bunch of camera gear for the trip. We are video production guys...

The side luggage mounts do two things really. One is a secure mounting point. The other is to keep the luggage from collapsing the right side cover onto the muffler where it will soon melt or the left side where it will get sucked into the wheel/chain/sprocket.

Are those issues largely minimized shortening the top straps and mounting the bags fairly high? I guess one advantage to mounting them lower is simply a lower center of gravity! ME LIKE that advantage with the super high bike we have.

I value your input highly. If you say 'Taylor, go with the side racks, you will not be sorry you spent the money' then I wouldn't say another word about it.

Hey has anyone heard of somehow adding rubber or something similar to the engine mounts to maybe reduce the vibrations from the engine to the rest of the bike? Anything to cut down on vibrations? My buddy at work was mentioning something about it so i figured id ask the experts.
Thanks

Here's an idea for a Pelican top case (stolen from RZRob - thanks!) if you haven't already sorted that out.

Not gonna happen. If you think the XRL vibrates go ride a LC4 KTM. Not that bike has it's own built in paint shaker.

Mefo tire size...

I do not want to or need to start a "which tire is best" or "which tire size is best" discussion
But I wonder if one of the inmates using Mefo tires would be willing to measure the rear tire width.
I know that a tire sold as, for example a 130, can measure less than 130, or it can measure more.
The question I am asking: is Mefo smaller or larger than the size stated on the sidewall?
What is the actual size of a rear mounted Mefo?

One seller of Mefo tires says the 130/80 - 18 is the same as the original rear 4.60 -18 the XR650L was sold with.
The math says a 130 should measure 5.11 inches.
The seller says they cannot provide the actual measurement.

Is someone willing to actually measure a rear mounted Mefo to answer this question?
If you do measure a tire, please tell me both the sidewall size and the actual measurement.

Thanks.

These bikes have almost no vibration to speak of but one of my 600's (same donk almost) used to make my eyes itch with flutter and tingle my toes at high rpm, turned out to be the clutch bush, replaced it and no eye flutter or toe tingle any more, it was bugger all wear on the old bush but obviously just enough to cause throwout, not saying that is your buddies issue though.
I put grip puppies on to relieve my incorrectly healed broken wrist and that makes a difference by reducing minimal vibration to less vibration.
The only vibration I have on mine now is the exhaust pulse.
