Can you locate the noise? By the oil filter housing would be the oil pump bypass valve. Higher up could be the cam chain, chain guides, tensioner.

Still trying to track down the buzzing on mine. Only happens at higher rpm's when the engine is warmed up.

And there is no check valve in the oil pump only a pressure bypass ( direct acting relief valve to be percise).
Definitely not the auto-decompression, the noise goes away when the motor warms up. Plus, the exhaust valves have never needed or been adjusted.

I have noticed for a while now that the oil all drains down into the engine within a few minutes when the motor is cold. I think I'll just go ahead and change out the complete pump.

All you need to stop the oil drain back is the OIL STOP seal

A piece of 1/4" to 1/2" tubing and an ear works well enough to do this for me most times.

I'll get a piece of tubing and check when I get home. I tried last night, but it had already warmed up too much so the noise had gotten much quieter. I'll be ready for it tonight.

When I first got mine, it had an awful buzzing noise from the right rear of the motor only at high rpm. Turned out to be the washer under the cotter pin on the back side of the brake lever.

Hello All...

...I just purchased an 04 XR650L and am hoping to get in some dual sport riding time this summer. The XR is my 4th bike in the garage and I'm riding out of the Hudson Valley of New York. I've been back riding for 10 years now with over 175K road miles.
