Byways over Salisbury plain

Well I realise most of you lot are not in the UK, but can anybody recommend some nice easy byways over Salisbury plain? Given I've got a 950 Adventure on stock tyres and no off road experience apart from 1/2 and hour last Wednesday, I'd like to ride somewhere where I'm not going to get stuck!

I ended up riding through paths like this http://matthelliwell.blogspot.com/20...-now-have.html

last Wednesday. Very exciting but the tyres were an inch bigger than when they started due to all the mud and clay!

I think most of the lanes are TRO'd at the minute.......have a look on the TBM forum

They will help here.

Don't think there TRO'd but I could be wrong. Anyway TBM looks like the place to go, thanks.

Thanks. I'd never tried going off road until I happened to go past a byway sign so I've been a bit ignorant about where to look for info until now.

I am a member of the TRF but i must say it's hard to get info out of them in reasonable time unless one goes on rideouts with them etc.I find the TBM forum a good source of information which is replied to rather fast and also can meet guys who are experienced in riding that area.
I do say to join the TRF for fighting for our rights although in my opinion it needs to be modernised quite a lot.

The above are my opinions and i am not in any way trying to influence ones decision.

If you don't mind slumming it with the Africa Twinset*, there are rides organised here www.xrv.org.uk every now and then, and I'm sure the UKGSer's do it too.

I've been meaning to have a look at this site for the same reason http://www.offroadroutes.net/index.asp but haven't got around to forking out the dosh.

Let me know if you fancy getting together (I'm in North London) on the Plain, I'm sure I could round up a few others to help pick the bikes up when we fall ! And it's been fairly dry recently so I'd think the routes are quite "friendly" still.

*All, I mean ALL welcome!

Cheers
-Simon

It really does depend what you're after. There's everything from DEEP mud filled pools and unclimable hills to nice hardcore covered tracks.

I live about this |--------| far from the Plain, and have been out there once or twice, although not this year.

So, what're you after?

Cheers!.. Ciemon

Maybe we should arrange a trip . I'd personally be after fire road/gravel type stuff. My Dunlops with a near slick tread are proving somewhat troublesome in muddy spots . I could be tempted to go with some knobblies, although that might detract from my giant motard-stylee

Well we're having a gathering in March, but if you don't want to wait that long, http://streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=414195&y=150255&z=4&sv=414500,150500&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf
is a good start point, you can head East or West from there, East is a safe bet if you don't know what state the ranges are in. And the great thing is that you're never too far from a real road.

Of course, if you want to see how good you are, then just go to http://streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=...=newsearch.srf

Sorry about the long links, can't work out how to make them smaller with this setup

Matt,

As Cie and I said, us Africa Twinkies are having a ride across the Plain on March 19th, and it'd be great to see you there, keep an eye on http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3250 for more details. This'll be my first time on Salisbury and I'm not running knobblies and have very little experience, so come along and watch me fall!

Cheers

Thanks. That sounds like something to try out.
