Hey Nick

- Did you end up putting the Odyssey in? If so how was the installation?

Cheers
Mark

Don't fit in Aussie bikes

I was going to try and get an odyssey, but in the end I got a YTX9BS.....but it doesn't fit Aus spec bikes, which have a 10.

Not sure why, so basically there is pretty much no way to get an odyssey to fit

Just something for Aussie's looking in this area for ideas.

Thanks for this. I'm in South Africa so mine might be the same as yours - will check before deciding on a replacement

Sorry, but I don't follow ya. The Odyssey is smaller than the YTX9BS... but they do have an oddly designed top, which I showed earlier in the thread. Is that what you mean?

Well I didn't actually order an odyssey, as it there were none available in my area, but Aus spec bikes actually have a YTZ10S battery, I tried a YTX9BS but it was waaaay too tall, I think mine has a different battery box to the US spec models. Would sort of stand to reason as we do not have the extreme cold weather that you fella's get.

I started this thread on the Speed Cell batteries:

So, after reading this thread, I decided to pop for the Odyssey PC310. $117 out the door from local shop.

First things first. There seems to be some confusion about height issues. Side by side, the PC310 is 5.21mm lower than the YTX9-BS.

Dimensions:

YTX9-BS: H:104.83mm Width: 149.84mm Thick: 84.73

PC310: H: 99.62 Width: 137.74 Thick: 85.82

I can make up the difference in thickness and width with some rubber scraps, so no problem there.

The stock rectifier mount does not fit well because of the tab that wraps around the tall part of the stock batt...

Solution: Cut tab off with hacksaw.

There is about 6mm that I need to fill with some heavy rubber foam, but that will have to wait, (I'll tell you why in a minute).

Here's something odd. The bolts supplied with the Odyssey, are not the standard 1/4" you get with every other battery on the planet. They measure 3.75mm instead, which is much smaller than the ID of the connections on my bike, and for that matter, every other bike I've ever seen.

Why? I have know idea. I called Odyssey to ask, but everyone who works there was out riding bikes with Yuasa batteries, which don't have this problem.

A few washers later, I had the test install complete:

So far, so almost good. I planned to tidy up the wiring later.

But I never got that far. Bike would not start, (which is why I bought the Odyssey to begin with).

Well, crap. What have I missed? Nothing. Hmmmm. Tester time...

9.72 (That's not good)

5.48 under load (that's worse than not good).

So now I'm pissed. Checked the date on top of the battery- March 2008.
Despite being told it was "ready to go", it appears the distributor has had this thing sitting on a self for a year, with no charger, trickle or otherwise.

Not happy. Had the shop call them for a replacement.

Further updates to follow...

Hunter

Hey Hunter, good timing. I am ordering one of these pc310's for my 03 640A on Monday.
I had read thru this thread last eve, and gave the Canadian rep a call. He quoted me $156 Canadian, delivered to my door in Calgary.
I will make sure to follow your posting, as well ask the Odyssey rep to send a new fully charged unit.

Just installed a new Odyssey pc 310 on my 03 640 adventure.
The 310 is indeed taller than the stock battery by about 3/8 ".
I did install reverse polarity of the original unit, other than that, quick and clean.
What a big improvement.
