really just ride up to the dmv with title, get the vin done and walk out with plates. i make a weekend trip out of the experience by going to the bennington branch which is also the closest. your meant to get it inspected, for dirt bikes to street legal dual sport it's pre-registration and i think post for street. since my bikes stay in nyc i don't bother and i'm pretty sure nypd could not give me a ticket for some questionable items and whatnot. but VIN verification is basically the only thing needed besides title. for untitled bikes check out the vermont dmv thread.

GIVE BLOOD! PLEASE GIVE BLOOD - SOME GAVE ALL. Motorcyclist Blood Drive & Party- Sunday February 17, 2013 Queens, NY American Motorcyclists Association-District 34 will host a blood drive on Sunday, February 17, 2012, 10:30a.m.-4:30p.m. at Harley-Davidson/Buell® of NYC, 42-11 Northern Boulevard, Long Island City, NY 11101. You don’t need a bike to get here, riders are encouraged to bring a carload of friends to donate a pint of blood. It’s going to be a great time!

The members of AMA D-34 and staff at Harley-Davidson of NYC are planning a winter blues-busting party with music by the Transplant Band, a bagel brunch buffet and raffles. Check out the 2013 motorcycles and riding gear. Big-hearted bikers and the surrounding community donated 50 pints last year, but the need is greater than ever.

Blood supplies decrease in winter since fewer people donate. Your donation supports this community, where it is most likely lifesaving to help someone you know. The New York Blood Centers experienced professionals guarantee each donors comfort and safety; they'll even receive a gift.

All adults are welcome, however, those with a tattoo less than one year old are not eligible to donate.

Pissed need to vent

Time to find a new world.

A company that made NET profits in 2010 of 3.59 billion, 2011 of 2.06 billion, and should be doing about the same for 2012, just fired my boss, who has been with the company for about 20 years, because according the business models, he was a VP without enough departmental responsibilty. This after they forced him over the last year to outscource functions to India (where I had to go work in a town that smelled of burning human feces).

I've been told by my managers and those around me that no one here has received a bonus or a raise since 2007. As my "industry" keeps making billions in profits, I'm getting priced out of my neighborhood in brooklyn. I don't know how much longer I can stay in this city.

Sorry, man. I know you've had the fuzzy end of that lollipop for a while.

Sadly, very unsurprising that your department is poorly funded and morale is low, given that you work in the one part of the financial industry which is supposed to be making sure all the other parts aren't robbing the country, blind.

(Now that I write all that, I'm pretty sure you should just post this to the Basement and get it over with. )

Oh I get it man. I a union carpenter and I make decent money and could NEVER afford to live in Carroll gardens if I didn't live in my mother in laws building. I was born and raised here and there are fewer and fewer natives left because its just too damn expensive to stay. Now that we got screwed on our last union contract I'm really worried about the future for my kids. I'm going to have to move to PA if I want to buy a big enough house for my 3 kids.

My situation is even worse, my boss is Indian and he brought in consultants at $175K a year (5 of them) to replace employees that have been with the company for over a quarter of a century....

John,
Vapor lock issue with the tank? Next time it dies, open the tank and see if you hear and audible hiss and it fires up.
Good luck,
Rich

I don't know your line of business, but I had a client who insisted on using an offshore software dev team. The company's logic was, "If they charge only 20% of what domestic programmers charge, then even if they take twice as long, it will still be a bargain!"

I was tasked with managing their work. I can tell you with authority, that is NOT true.

Developers charging only 20% (or 40%, whatever) may actually NEVER get the project done. Never. Not in 200% of the time. Not in 400% of the time. Simply NEVER. And, often if they do, the code quality will be SO terrible that making ANY change in the future will be difficult, or impossible.

I hired two of the best developers I knew locally to manage about 15 off-shore devs. We did this for about three years.

After that experience, I have no fear of being replaced with offshore computer programmers.

Pretty much all of them were well-meaning, and hard-working. That is the good part. However, as the saying goes: "Failure: When your very best just isn't good enough."

Despite their best intentions, we found the developers we worked with (about 40 individuals at three different companies) to be uniformly mediocre. At one point I asked my friend and lead dev (one of the most talented programmers I've ever worked with in 19 years of doing this professionally) to grade all the offshore resources we were using on an "A" to "F" scale.

Nobody got an "A".

One dev got a "B". FYI, after the project he moved to the US and now is H1B staff, charging American-level wages.

All the rest got "C", "D", and "F". One comment from my friend which stuck in my mind:

"I'll give XXXX a 'D'. He creates more bugs than any other developer on the project, but he fixes a lot, too." Put THAT on your resume!

Bottom line for me is this: If a company has never worked with good developers, then they might as well offshore to India/China/Russia/Philippines. You'll never know what you're missing.

However, if you need the job done RIGHT, you will need actual.. you know... professionals.

Thanks Rich.

I did open the tank to make sure I had fuel but it still wouldn't start. I'm home know and charging the battery, I'll try it in an hour.

Thanks for the advice!!

Heh. Reminds me of the group I managed at my last job (I think they were in Pune). Really nice guys, and they would do exactly what I asked. But, that was the problem... (I hate to use this cliche) they couldn't think outside the box- at all. They were "support" (not programmers), so we would have unexpected things occur where we needed to improvise. That's where they were useless. In that respect, they were like robots- very good at repetitive tasks (which my American staff hated to do), but whenever they ran into any sort of roadblock, it was like their brains shut down.
