And there it is. This is becoming a game of word subtleties.

To say someone deserves something is to say that they warrant some sort of reward or punishment, typically for doing something in particular.

So strictly speaking, a jaywalker deserves a desk appearance ticket, not to be punted through the air by a motor vehicle.

If and when a jaywalker does get punted and/or crushed, especially on a road that is widely known for having taken the lives of hundreds of people, that jaywalker does not deserve compassion or sympathy.

When we read reports about some numb-nuts sticking a hand into a lion cage at the zoo and pulling back a shredded stump, do we rush to sympathize?

Let's be clear here. The woman who was struck by the motorcycle in Woodside was crossing against the light. She was jaywalking and nobody can argue to the contrary. The NY Daily News reported that video footage proved the motorcycle had a green light. The motorcycle was registered and street legal.

What is interesting is that witnesses initially told police the bike ran the light. Also interesting is that WABC-TV (which predictably and immediately blamed speeding for the collision) reported Baker was one of a group of 20 motorcycles but the Daily News said "about five". Draw your own conclusions.

And if anyone here wants to be truly sickened, read the reader commentary on the CBS article.

Meanwhile many articles contain babble from the NYPD saying that Queens Boulevard is popular for drag racing, but the weekend and non rush hour traffic signal timing in that area hardly lends itself to that.

The pedestrian has been identified as 78 year old Marion Kurshuk, described by one neighbor as "a nice old lady who refused to let her age bog her down" and who "had a problem getting around". "She was always going, but she was always careful," Margaret Poncel, another neighbor, said. "She liked to go."

Apparently she wasn't that careful, after all.

It's that time of the year once again, when I take mom for a drive to see the ridiculously gaudy and amazingly impressive Christmas light displays adorning people's homes and properties. I have a list of this year's destinations below. If you think I'm missing something notable, please contribute!!!

In order to keep seat time reasonable I'm restricting the tour to Brooklyn and Queens, with a slight detour through Rockaway this year to see a heavily publicized home at Beach 143rd and Neponsit Avenue.

Brooklyn

310A 22nd Street (South 'Slope) 6th-7th Avenues (5p-10p

Corner of Flatlands Avenue and East 93rd Street, Canarsie (yes really)

Of course, Dyker Heights 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd and 86th

I'll also be criss-crossing western Bay Ridge for its overall festiveness but no specific homes in particular.

Queens

166th Street and 23rd Avenue, Bayside (til 1am)

185-07 80th Drive, Jamaica Estates (til midnight)

80th Drive and Chevy Chase Street, Fresh Meadows

76th Street and 77th Avenue, Ridgewood (go early!)

56th Avenue and 214th Street, Bayside

And honorable mentions at 157-18 26th Avenue, Bayside

FWIW that last one also puts on a good display for Halloween.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
-Brad

Yes, I have two riding buddies who installed them on their bikes. Great alarm with TPMS and GPS tracking.
