If you wouldn't mind awfully checking the sidewalks as well, I'd be much obliged to you.

Hey everyone! New to NYC riding! Just got my 05' KLR 650 up here to Chinatown / LES from Charleston WV. Nervous as hell as I get up to speed on theft protection! Had a little bit of a power issue riding up day before yesterday going to diagnose it today after work. Would love to go riding, especially dual sporting, I'll buy the beer!

welcome aboard!

some basic/ obvious tips regarding theft protection (from someone who's already had a bike stolen in the city):

-if you can afford it, park your bike in a safe garage, there are several bike friendly places and/or bike ONLY places

-if you're parking on the street overnight, definitely chain it to something with a big ass lock, preferably around the frame if possible.

-park in well lit/ busy/ surveillance-camera prone places, not in some dark alleyway.

-always use a disc lock, possibly an alarmed disc lock, and try to keep your bike covered as much as possible. i personally carry my cover on the back and cover it up if i'm going to be parked anywhere for more than an hour or so.

-definitely get full coverage insurance. unfortunately for us dual-sport owners in NYC, there's a high risk of theft as they are prime targets for local thieves.

-if you believe in some kind of god, pray to him/her. a lot.

all fairly obvious, but hey, what the hell... there's more here http://hellforleathermagazine.com/20...orcycle-thief/ and here http://nymstf.org/Parking.htm and I'm sure other folks will have additional suggestions.

i'm also totally down for more local dual-sport rides, so hit me up! i'm a noob on dirt though... will be doing the Pine Barrens course in the fall.

Hey Frey,

Welcome!!!

What kinda problems you have with the bike?

I'm almost finished with my KLR rebuild:

Right now I'm riding my Tengai so wave if you see me

I've got a ton of extra parts for the KLR so let me know if you need anything. I work on Broadway and Rector St. There are some trails up by me (Rockland COunty) if you want to take a ride.

Ride safe!

John

Nah, at one point i had 4 KLRs (2 running and 2 in pieces). It's an addiction, just like Land Rovers (have 4 of them also)

Welcome to the neighborhood. Not sure if you're planning to park on street or in a lot - the lot on Suffolk and Grand St. has m/c spaces for $150 or $175/mo. (depending on how charming you are, I guess.) There's a garage of Grand on Allen St., and that's $175 - but there's an elevator involved, and it sometimes breaks. Upside is that you get to park next to a DeLorean. The garage on Columbia St. and Delancey is way more expensive than it should be. Some folks park under the bridge by the firehouse/police precinct on Pitt St. at Delancey - not sure how good of a strategy that is. There are a handful of bike also parked on Pitt St. near Rivington across from the school - they've been there for a while, and seem no worse for wear. One is a retro Ducati. In terms of theft deterrence, I'd park next to that one!
