I once had a female mallard commit suicide into the side of my house. The whole house shook, they can fly pretty fast, like up to 55MPH.

Also got hit once on my car windshield by a red tailed hawk. He swooped down from a tree on a small road, covered my whole windshield when he hit.

I was going pretty slow, small winding road, and he was able to recover, and fly back into a tree.

Riding Companions?

I plan on helping to verify the Northern New England trail late September or early October and am seeking riding companions. I'll be on my dr350, who's with me?

The trail thread is here.

If you can't do the whole week I definitely recommend Canuman's RedNEK Rendezvous September 28th - 30th, planned routes, FREE, and there may even be a food truck

NYC "tent" space

Hello,

One of the ADV'ers listed on the Tent Space thread cannot host at the moment and recommended we post here.

We are traveling North America from the West Coast, and are currently in Long Island. The "we" consists of James (myself, male, 48) and Rachael (female, 33). We hail from San Jose, California, are both very conscientious, and are riding a KTM 990 Adventure and BMW F650GS, respectively. Right now we are staying with family in St. James, Long Island, and are attempting to arrange a brief visit to NYC during this next week before we ride south.

We are wondering if there is anyone in the NYC area who has an extra futon or such and wouldn't mind putting us up for a night (preferably indoor, but if need be we can bring our tent, etc). Currently we are targeting Wednesday morning to come in to the NYC area, spend the day in the city, the night at a play, and go from there...we know that the city has a lot to offer, and if it worked out to stay two nights then that would be great, but even one night would be very much appreciated. Right now we're poring over the LIRR/subway/etc maps trying to make sense of it all! We can take the train in or ride, based upon what works best for everyone involved.

My email address is bluessurf AT hotmail.com, my cell phone number is 408.805.6678, and our travels are pictorially documented on our web site at http://www.bluesurfphotography.net/T...Exploring-2012, although we are a bit behind. We are generally available and will return communication asap.

Thanks for the consideration!

Cheers,
James & Rachael

Good Touch, Bad Touch?

Was just walking dog around the block, when I spotted a couple on E26th btw. Park and Lex trying to get out of a very very tight parking space. There was an SUV behind them and a Triumph Speed Triple in front. They probably had a total of 8 inches of maneuvering space front and back.

After an few unsuccessful attempts to pull out with his passenger guiding him, the driver exited the car and was about to move the bike to give himself more space.

My NYC instinct kicked in, and I screamed, "DON"T TOUCH THE FUCKING BIKE" from across the street. He yelled back asking if it was my bike. I screamed back, "NO, but DON'T TOUCH THE FUCKING BIKE."

Upon getting home, I realized that I probably should have just helped him move it out of the way. While I hate the idea of someone touching my bike, I think I'd rather have it touched by hands than a fender.

What do the more experienced commuters think the proper response should be?

I have moved peoples bikes before. If you do it without damaging anything I don't see a problem.
