I don't know how many of the parts will work on earlier models, but maybe some will.

I thought I was the only one with an XL500R. I put mine together from a crate a couple years ago, sold it, missed it, bought it back. Ride it all over the place. Put over 5000 miles on it the first 2 months I had it. My only complaints are no seat options (painful on long trips) and it needs valve stem seals. Very torquey. I've owned 6 bikes in the last 2 years and the old XL is my favorite.
How it looked when I got it:

How it looked a couple months and 300 bucks later:

How it looks now:

Gas Tank Options

I'm new to ADVrider so I would like to say what's up to everyone.

Question: does anyone know if the gas tanks on the '82Xl500R and the '83 (or later) XL600R are interchangeable?

And: does anyone have any oversized tank manufacturer suggestions for an 82Xl500R?

Here is an '84 XL600R Clarke tank on my '82 XL500R. The short of it is, it can be made to work. I had to modify the decompression lever on the head and make a bracket to support the rear of the tank. The lock to lock on the steering head also has to be adjusted to keep the triple clamp out of the tank. Lastly the seat needs to be modified, mine is two seats hacked together, and recovered / reworked. It's a lot of work for a few extra litres of fuel. The biggest difference is that the '84 has the oil in frame which is totally different then the earlier bikes.

Thanks for the pic and the answer. Sweet XL.

I was more curious to know if a stock XL600R tank fits on a 1982 XL500R, or not. I tried the part #'s but they are different so I'm gonna have to actually try the tank. I'll keep you posted.

I would say you would face the same basic issues, except maybe not with the decomp. lever to fit an XL600R tank on an XL500R. The rear mount positioning relative to the front mounts are very different. That said, I've never done it so I'd be curious as well.

Finally got my 1979 Honda XL500S

Hey all, I have finally gotten my hands on a 1979 Honda XL500S. A friend of a friend sold this one to me for $600! It runs great and for the most part the body is in great shape. It needs some work on the turn signals as they are currently inop. So far i've been on it about two hours and am in love.

Thats what i thought too. It only had one owner prior to me and he only used it on his ranch.

What a steal!! Beautiful. I think the low end torque of my xl500 was better than my 1983 XL600R.

What have i done?

"Free" bike, '79 XL500s one owner... motor locked... 6,000 original miles... all parts are there... optimistic at this point though. I'll try to post pics or link later. Wish me luck!

BTW why is it that I am not happy unless I smell like old gas and beer??
