AK Insurance

WTF! I cant believe what I just heard. I called my insurance company and updated my auto insurance to an AK policy. It freakin' doubled. This is just madness. I was expecting the opposite.

A buddy of mine is trying to relocate to Las Vegas, NV and his Insurance Company (that Sears one) said it would drop immensely.

A good portion of drivers up here have a very short memory... Every year it snows like clockwork, but everyone drives like it is the first time they have ever seen it before, panic, and run into each other or become unauthorized stunt drivers (ditch diving)... Spring and fall are the worst as invariably we will get a week of clear roads only to have it snow again, which starts the cycle all over again.

Seriously.

I would ask your insurance company why, honestly. You will probably get the best rates on a car like a Subaru (Official car of Alaska), and a RWD sporty car will be through the roof. 4WD trucks are hit and miss as there is also a subculture that like to go drive on the mud flats, get stuck, and have their truck sucked out to sea when the tide comes in. Unless you are loyal to your company, shop around...

Welcome to the club. Now if you think bike insurance is high, check into health insurance.

You might try changing companies, look on line with Progressive or Geico.

Be very careful with progressive, they suck!
I hit a dog on Big Lake Road a couple of years ago. The bike was not damaged much. Yet they wouldn't allow me to ride even though the bike was safe. Then they wanted to total it for 300 dollars of damage. When I balked at accepting a totalled bike deal, they really got surley.
It took 3 months to get my bike released from insurance prison. They actually came out to my home twice and created an insane argument about what I was "going" to allow them to do. I threw them off of my land both times.
Be very careful, because with insurance, you do get what you pay for, less is really LESS!

Ouch!! Don't blame you for being pissed at them.

Hopefully Stu can find a better deal with a decent company.

I'm former military so I have USAA insurance. They have been able to beat anyone thus far. I have my 97 VW Jetta, 04 Ford F-150 4WD, 04 BMW 1150 GSA + renters insurance. I also have my insurance premiums way jacked up. Living in CA, I like being over insured. Here all that costs me about $750 every 6 months. It went to $1400+ every 6 months. Granted, I can tweak my coverage and get it down some. But, it still doubled for the same coverage.

Sounds like you might not be too far out by our standards. Remember to hack 6 months off your GS ins bill as it'll be sleeping. That might be all you need to get it in line for our area. Never hurts to shop though.

Wanna check the local ins cost w/ a guy that used to sell GS's at the local bike shop? That'd be Eric w/ St. Farm. His # is 907.333.6575. He'd be able to give you a better idea.

I've had nothing but good luck with Progressive here in the lower 48. I hit a deer, didn't go down but had lots of plastic damage on a 1200 Bandit. Rode away from the scene, cops weren't called. Called Progressive the next day and the adjuster came to my place of work to look at the bike. He noted about 1100 dollars damage at first, then he saw scratched paint on the frame and wanted to total the bike. I told him I didn't want the bike totaled.

He said if I could live with the paint scratch, he would wave the deductible and fix everything else. DEAL! Also had two claims on our van, neither our fault. No problems. Good rates also!

Sounds standard to me....

....I have State Farm, and my premiums doubled from Tennessee to Alaska. The motorcycle stayed about the same, I figured that was due to them figuring it would be in storage half the time or it would have doubled also.

They (regressive) actually asked me if I was on the road when I had hit the dog. Lets see? I had to drive down into the ditch following the truck to hit the dog chasing the truck.!

And then asked me if it was my dog. Lets see? I didn't like the dog much and since it was chasing a complete strangers truck, I figured it would be great to wreck my bike and kill the little bitch.

I was treated very poorly, I believe I was handed far to much

I am a mechanic, I have been one for 38 years. Made my living with wrenches all these past years. I was told I wasn't qualified to reattach the side engine bar. They would only accept a professional shop to do any repairs to my bike.

The Motorcycle Shop in Anchorage (wonderful people) had to come to my defense and tell the insurance company I was as qualified, if not more qualified than they were. The regressive insurance company after another 2 weeks cut me a check to fix my bike.
