23-211
I'm not sure what the best forum to put this one in... but as it's potential-wreck related, thought it might be here. I hope the mods move it if this isn't the right place.
--------- I was headed home at about 10pm after eating out with friends. While taking the tunnel-ramp from 17s to 85s in San Jose, an idjit in a red car flicked a half-used cigarette out the window. It expertly caught an upward flick of air, cleared my windshield and impacted on my visor in an amazing shower of sparks. Suck! Had this been a few years ago when I was still a nervous newbie, this could have sucked really bad. Road debris doesn't phase me any more, though... so I just got pissed instead of weaving or wrecking. I gave them a flick of the brights to let them know I was back there (the GL18 has stupidly bright brights), but nothing more; I behaved myself. Then I remembered... hey... I can read the license plate. I mentally jotted it down and then rolled past them at speed, to simply get away from them in case they were in a mood. When I got home I called 311 (the non emergency number) and got lost in the phone-maze. I logged in and emailed the SJPD instead using their 'cybercop system'. They just called me back (3 days later) and took a report. They take this pretty seriously, it seems. It's called a "23-211" -- throwing objects from a moving vehicle. Extra happy special penalties for it being a lit cigarette, since the Bay Area has a problem with these jerks lighting the freeways on fire every summer. They took the plate number and my poor description (red car, sedan) and said they'll go give this fellow a talking-to. ---- The reason for the post: The SJPD and highway cops say the same thing: See a cig-flick? report it. Definately. Get the license #, a desc of the car, and if you can -- a desc of the driver. If you have a cell phone, pull over and dial 911 (because 311 doesn't work from a cel) and ask to talk to the CHP if it was on a highway, or the city cops if on a surface street. Report it right away, and if they can they'll pull the person over while they're still on the road. They're trying to crack down on this behavior while it's still green and wet outside, long before it gets all brown and tinderboxy. They welcome the calls. Tell 'em it's a 23-211 if you're in California. |

Excellent Tugrik!
Shitbags using the road system as their personal ashtray really pisses me off. I've been hit numerous times in a shower of sparks. Go get those fuckers!

Unfortunately this has happend to me a few times in the South Bay.
I was hit by a lit but in Los Gatos about twelve years ago. This was summer time and the height of fire season. The damn thing hit my chest and dropped to my crotch. Luckily I was able to grab it before it did any damage. At the next long stoplight I stopped next to the convertible Mercedes and asked the woman if her car had an ashtray. "Of course it does!" she responded. "Great !" I said. "So the next time you finish a fucking cigarette you'll remember where not to throw it!" With that I tossed the lit butt back into her car and took off. I know I know not the nicest thing to do...but it sure felt great! Cheers, Jorge

That's awesome! Why dirty your ashtray when there is this nice outside world you can toss your trash into.I think the roads would be safer if everyone was forced to ride a motorcycle for at least a year in order to get their license. |

Can you imagine how bad our already littered roads would be if everyone had the attitude that butts or any paper for that matter is biodegradable. Many forrest and rangeland fires have been started and folks have lost everything they owned because of these inconsiderate people. Outwest

Said Freaking RT Rider:
"butts are biodegradable. relax fellas." Maybe for those tuff guys still puffing Lucky Strikes. As for the rest, they'll still be there in five years. When you come to Dry-as-Hell Colorado, keep 'em inside.

fiberglass filters are biodegradable? i think not,... not even in VA.
![]() and in case you missed it, that doesn't address the issue related to the fact that most of these things come flying out the window while still burning,... let's ignore the fact that your trash will still be around for your great-grandchildren... cheers! e Quote:
