Anyone found that unbendable 640 rim?

I have read many say (including Woody) the problem with the Behr rims is that they are too wide for any off-road tire to protect. Better for the street but obviously not for off road.

Did you bend it along the edge (minor dinging) or did you bend the F outa it? Pics? Bottomed out makes me guess you bent the whole F'er. Some did say they thought that particular model of Behr was too soft. The Excels and Suns have a great reputation; who knows if they are always better than all Behr models.

I thought the Aussie's enjoyed a recall on the Behr's but that might have been a dream I had once or some internet bull. Check with the Aussie 640a riders.

Shortly after I got my 640, I followed the general advice around here and had Woody build me a Sun 1.6 front wheel to replace the Behr 2.15 before I bent it...

Go with Woody's. Send the wheels to him and get the Excels instead of the Suns. You can't use standard rim locks with the Suns. If you ride it hard you might up the front springs. I raised the oil level to 100 mm trying delay buying new front springs. He was able to use my stock hub and the stock front spokes that look very strong.

Who told you the stock rims were high quality?

FYI,,,there is only one Sun rim that comes in an oddball size...the 2.75'' width....all others are built to WM [wheel manufacturers assoc]standards

Sun doesn't have a 2.5'' wide, however it does have a 3.0''

we have found the source for 2.75 heavy duty rim locks and have 20 in stock....they work great,,,you do need at least 7 oz to counterweight them for road use

people often ask which is ''BETTER'' excel or sun,,,if you are concerned with weight,,,the Excels usually weigh alittle less and are a little less expensive,,,they rely on a 7000 series higher tensile strength alloy and use less of it,,,Suns on the other hand use a 6000 series alloy and are beefier

more often beefier rules in the adventure scene,,,,lighter is essential in supermoto,roadracing,mx

just a point of clarification,,,Behr puts out really nice rims,,,,someone at the factory is specing these rims,,,,Behr builds them to spec,,,,just like DID built rims to honda specs in '84,,,or for KTM in late 90s using too high tensile strength..they all cracked on the lips and nipple holes...

the point being,,,the rim manufacturer gets a bad rap for building what the mc engineers thought they wanted.i routinely use the same rim manufacturers standard/generic product line offered to the public with no negative consequences.

Another point,,at woody's wheel works,,we can build ya wheels on the cheap to save ya money,,i have boxes of oem spokes ,,we can use standard lace patterns,,,new or used rims n stuff,,,whatever your budget and standards allow,,,

HOWEVER,,,as a fellow adventure rider and motorcycle rider/racer i feel compelled to at least inform and offer you a better solution if it is available,,,so you can have more and better options to choose from,,,,there's nothing wrong with a big mac or a whopper but after ya tasted prime rib.......well, you get the drift.

I need to replace my hexagonal behr's but I'm in the outer darkness at the moment so woody's is not an option.

I have found someone who can supply excels, but I'm wondering whether I'd be able to just buy the rims and move the spokes & hubs from the behr's to these excels? Is this even possible, and if so does anyone know if there's a thread that details spoke & hub removal & rebuilding?

Where exactly is outer darkness?

I've got a like new silver 1.6" KTM Excel wheel and have been thinking about switching to a black rim.

Maybe we can work out something.

I spent quite a bit of time sorting out a replacement rim for the front of my 640. Check Woody's thread in Vendors for some details, including good photo's, on "indexing". You need to be aware that any old KTM rim may not work with the standard hub. The spoke lacing is different on the '05 640's to all (most) other KTM rims and this might be the case for other years. Ie an EXC rim will not lace to a '05 640 hub. Do your homework and speak/email Woody's wheel works. They know what they're talking about and are extremely helpful.
