Locking Gas Cap for IMS KLR650 tank?

Any options for a locking gas cap for my new (group buy here, thanks!) IMS tank? Going to Central Am and would like the security when left unattended.

Even Mark836 wrote: "I sold mine and went back to stock for the locking cap, but I miss the radiator protection."

Anyone attempt a home solution? I was thinking a cable-pacsafe-like idea with a secured cover over the original cap attached to tank's shroud holes - but this seems so lowtech.

If someone really wants your fuel, they'll just punch a hole through the plastic and let it drain into their container.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Sure. But different issue

Yes, if that's the case - sure, take it, it's only gas.

But, the issue I'm considering is security. Having been to over 30 developing contries, I know that people (kids) are opportunists for mischief and dropping something in there may be good for a laugh. Granted, w/a pry bar, one can practically take the bike apart...that's not the person I'd be addressing w/the locking cap.

So, no available caps out there?

I don't know if you will be able to get one to specifically fit the IMS tank, but you should be able to get a locking cap kit that you can retrofit onto the tank with a bit of work

I thought about the same thing parking in the city, random shit heads, etc.
Have not seen one for the IMS or Clarke line, but I did find that Acerbis sells a vented locking cap.

Not sure if it fits thier entire line, but it fits the 4.2 gallon I bought for my KLX/DRZ.
I tried it on my Clarke 3.9 and its not a tight fit.

Just so other 400s owners dont get confused, the Acerbis 4.2 is made for the E not the S.
Requires some mods to mount on the S, fan, horn, seat mount, etc.

Might fit the IMS, or you could see if Acerbis will make you KLR guys a tank.

never seen one, but you should be able to rig up a tank bag that it is a PITA to get to the gascap unless you know the secret trick (or lock).

Locking Gas Cap, IMS tank.

Someone sent me this:

"Here is a link that should get you to the cap.
http://shop.thumpertalk.com/catalogs...ault.asp?p=317

Part 73-6714

This is the one I purchased and it fits the IMS tank like it was made for it."

Ordered it - will see if it fits.

Did you ever find out if it is going to work? I would like to get one for the IMS tank on my KLR.

It's still on backorder... They say it'll ship in a few weeks.

Once I get it, I'll check it out and post the results.

I have a locking Acerbis cap

Hello Ya'll,
I have a Clarke 4.3 gallon tank on my Xr650r. I bought the locking Acerbis cap like the one listed earlier. It would go on my Clarke but not really lock down. I bought the mounting flange that they, Acerbis, has and I cut the top part off of my tank. After about an hour of mounting the nuts and bolts it works great. I now have a locking tank. Like RJP said I really don't care about the gas it is the things in the tank. Someone stole the cap off of my Xr600r that I had converted to being streetlegal. Why can't people leave other people's stuff alone. Hope that helps. If ya'll want pictures I can post them. Have fun, Tony

Do all IMS tanks use the same cap? I.e. would a KLR tank be the same as a DR tank? If so that locking cap would then work for me as well, which is a little bit of security I'd also like to have for the "mischevious kids" factor.

Please update us when you test the locking gas cap. I have an KLR650 IMS tank on the way and I will be very interested to see how that locking gas cap works out. I am assuming that the locking gas cap is vented?

I'd say it would have to be vented to work.

Had a problem w/the IMS cap and hose when the bike "spitted and sputtered" one day - realized quickly that it was a partial vacuum in the newly-filled tank caused by the tank bag being starpped too tightly. I have since added a 90 degree elbow just above the cap...

Where did you get the 90 degree elbow? It special equipment or is it something from an autoparts store?

Auto parts store - just look for the vacuum line connections.
