My weekend project.

A while back I bought a used 950. I got it with 11k on the clock. At 13.5k Coyote and I adjusted the valves. We noticed some scoring on the cams. I discussed the issue with the local dealer. He blew me off.

Later I put the bike up for sale. Some of you ask about service modes. So I called Scott at Elite. He was very nice and ran my VIN number. The bike had all the service modes done to it. Then I ask him about the cams. He said that I should bring the bike in. We compromised on me sending over photos.
Scott said that some early 950 had materials issues with their cams.

I took the bike apart last night and shot these.

All of these were taken off the front head. I still have to do the rear.

I have pulled the bike off the forsale listing. And I will be talking to Scott about this today. I don't have any idea if the amount of scoring is normal or abnormal. So until I find out I thought that I would see what you guys think.
I am not out to rant about anything. Nor am I out to bash KTM. I am just a guy with a concern looking to understand this issue.

For those of you who may be interested. The bike will be back on the block as soon as I get this issue resolved.

I believe there is an issue with surfacing on certain batches of cams.

I've seen some off an '04 that were showing signs of premature degradation.

Hopefully KTM fairly handles the issue for you.

And now for the rear head.

This head is not as bad as the front. I still don't know if any of this is bad. I guess that we will soon find out.

Regards
Tim

I talked to a good dealer today. He said that these parts look great.

So back together and back on the old block.

So I am putting the bike back together while dreaming of Sunday's ride. I was planning on hitting some backcountry. Maybe a little adventure fishing.

When while filling the radiator I noticed the black plastic chips. Now I am spending my money on water pump parts.

Or is this some kind of optical illusion?

Looks like both cams are like that in the same spot, my guess is its a clearance thing for an auto decom mechanism or something

I've done 3 valve adjustments and I do not remember seeing that piece of the cam missing, gees now I will have to take a closer look next time, cannot believe that would not have caught me attention, now I'm not going to sleep to well, untill someone can verify that cutout is on all cams.

Designing a cutout there makes no sense to me (not to say it's not possible).

Tappets are designed to rotate to even out wear - seems like having part of the cam missing would eventually lead to a "stepped" wear pattern.

I looked in the parts manual. but the drawings of the cams are too small to make out detail.

Then why not make the whole cam surface narrower?

Would save weight, right?

Can anyone else confirm that "cutout" is a designed feature?

The surface near the edge of the cutout looks like a finished surface. I sent those same photos to the dealer. He gave me a clean bill of health. I'd say that those cutouts are factory.

Besides if you look at the second photo you can see that both cams have cutouts. The cutout in the lower cam is a little hard to find.

Next stop water pump.

I popped the rear head valve cover off this morning. I wanted to take a closer look at the notch. And maybe help clear the air.

The notch is factory. The finish on the darker cast part is a cast finish. There is no way that metal could have broken loose out of that spot and leave a finish like that.

Regards.
