Red Centre, Australia

This is the story of my brief trip through central oz. It was my first real offroad trip on a bike - I learned heaps, took pics, and got lots of bruises. The trip was gonna be two weeks, but a death in the wife's family peeled two off the start and then work wanted me back earlier too. Anyway, just for reference, here's what the bike looked like the day before departure. Pretty huh? Virginal even.

Arrived at the end of the first day in a town called Hawker, at the southern end of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. That was 1200km for the day. A sore butt, but I was at the start of the real ride - a few km up the road I'd be on the dirt - the Oodnadatta Track

Day two

Lots of these in outback South Australia. The road is bitumen from Hawker until Lyndhurst - about 200km.

Lyndhurst - the start of the Strzelecki Track. Anyway, this is where the dirt starts.

Marree, the start of the Oodnadatta Track on a strip of tar that runs through town.

The track proper. Sandy, gravelly in places, but good condition. 90kmh at this stage (50mph?).

Lake Eyre South is just off one side of the track. A big salt pan that stretches way over the horizon.

This might show it a bit better.

Ruins overlooking the lake. God knows who thought it was a good idea to live here. There's nothing for hundreds of km - no water, no people, zippo.

At this point the track is well formed of crushed gravel, but you can see the red sand dunes in the background. Eventually, the track deteriorates.

A small jump-up on the side of the track gave a bit of a view. Not much to see, but it gives you an idea of how far you are from anything.
