f650gs dakar, emblem removal and fairing cut from faux tank fairing?

i am just in the process of painting my dakar because i hate the grey on it. its a shame as i love the blue, why the hell the painted over it in naff grey i do not know
anyway, after i pat it i want to not have the emblem on the faux tank. I have seen people do this before but what is the best way to semi blank off the air intake hole? do i need to trim to neaten up, what size mesh should i fit for airflow ect ect.
Also i'm in the process of fitting USD forks and want to cut the faux tank fairings too. so where is the best place to cut and what have people done to neaten up?

heres a pic of mine with some mods. i used stainless mesh from the hardware store and cut it a little bigger than the opening on the panel and jbwelded it to the back. i alsu cut the front section of the panel flush with the angle of the forks before painting them.i filled the emblem holes with fiberglass resin bfore painting panels too.
