Vancouver Island Coastal morning ride

I took off this morning for port Renfrew on the south west coast of Vancouver Island. It is a ride of a bit over 200 clicks and the road, the views and scenery are simply breath taking..
Curves after curves after curves..
So I take off at about 7:30 and head to the nearest Tim Horton’s (Our national coffee Mecca and Canadian symbol of good coffee. I do not do Bucks! If I want something like Bucks coffee I will just tap on a telephone and suck the creosote juice out of it.. Same taste! Much cheaper!) to fill my thermos with the best coffee.

First place you hit when you leave Victoria is Sooke, then Jordan River. Home of Shakie’s
Home of the Shakie’s burger..
A nice little shack on the side of the ocean where riders meet all the time and all year around. Watch the surfers and warm up top a 50 cents cup of coffee.
At the time I will be there this morning she will not be open.

After about 20 minutes the road opens on the coast and shows views after views after views of the Straight of Gorgia and the Olympic moutains range.

as you ride, the roads twists its ways through forests and watersheds in an endless dance of curves, hills and dips.. It really will make you go YeePee! in your helmet.

Then you start hitting really curvy and twisty stuff.. Cool! this is what riding is all about.. And i have to admit the my 06 Adventure is at home on this road...
you get through some narrow bridges and cross crystall clear rivers.. It is truly what BC is all about..

I go down and fill my 2 liter bottle with cold, crisp mountain stream fed water.. Cold like hell but DAMN is it ever good.
In the winter months the mountains are covered with snow at higher altitudes and the streams come down with a vengeance in the spring.. You have not had water till you had this..

On my way back up I come across one of our local inhabitants attempting to make is way across the road.. being a nature lover I do not want him to be crushed by a logging truck so i grab him and give him a ride across.. 10 feet and 2 seconds for me but 10 miles and an hour for him..
This little fellow ( About 6-8 inches long) is one of our forest creatures and thrives in the wet, moist environment that is coastal BC.

Then a few minutes later you start hitting some serious curves, switchbacks and hills.. Some of them are not for the beginner as they are sharp, steep and turns against themselves.

Same one but from a different angle..

After a few twisties and an hour and a half on the road i stop at one of the many viewpoints and have myself a cup of joe and take it all in..
Thinking "Am i ever lucky to live here and to be able to ride in places like this all the time no mater where I go
on this island."

Tehn about another 20 minutes and I get to Port Renfrew, home of the coastal cafe.. In there you will find the best Coastal seafood chowder you have ever eaten, Jessica the owner also makes everything she sells in there.
A lot of riders go there and it is common to ride by this place on the week end and see the parking lot half filled with bikes..

great front porche to sit on with your bike right by your table while you are chwing down and shooting crap with your buddies..

After a nice breakfast and couple of coffees I head back home and will be home shortly after 12..

Again remembering why we ride.. the crisp air flying around you. the wind carressing your face, the scenery flowing by and the bike waltzing with the road in an endless ballet. This is as far as i am concerned "Living"

If you ever comes this way! look me up. i will have you at my place and will show you roads and places you will from then on alwqays dream of..

Safe riding!

Photos look fine from here, dated 28/04/06.

Was there on a business trip where I had to drive up Saanich Road few years ago. Wished for a motorcycle.

Loved Victoria.
