Damn, can't beat that price! The DR650 manual specifies 10-40 and if it's not available, you can use other weights, ie: 10-30, 10-50, 15-40, 15-50 or 20-50.

You haven't had any problems with 5-40?

I had a 90, and was coming back from the AMA races at Elkhart Lake when I hit Chicago traffic (Grateful Dead show at Alpine Valley, CART Race at Milwakee, and the AMA races all hit the tollway at the same time...).

I was sitting in traffic when I smelled some sort of burning plasticy aroma. "Oh shit!"

My OSI saddlebag was becoming one with a sidepanel and a Hein Gierke rainsuit. Needless to say, my next sidepanel had an aluminum support to hold it away from the muffler.

Never. It's good enough for 50,000 miles between changes in semis, so I'm willing to bet it'll hold up for 3,000 between changes in the DR. Plus, it doesn't have the friction modifiers that car oil has. FWIW, I have no intention of starting an oil thread. I'm sure (insert high-priced bike-specific oil here) is better, but this stuff works fine for me.

DR Jetting For Peace and happiness

Picked up my 2006 DR the other day (thanks Pete!).
The new DR


First step:
Jetting.
This bike had stock jetting but with the air screw mod, no air box mods
and a FMF Q2 pipe is fitted. Sea level.

I am not inclined to go the Dyno Jet kit route as maintaining fuel economy
is important. Had a nice conversation with the guys at Factory Racing
in San Rafael, CA (5 minutes from my house) and got some good tips.

The bike was backfiring madly which means a lean condition somewhere.
I wanted to go to a bigger main jet but they said NO. I also wanted to
eliminate the flat spot in the mid range and lessen the power boost type
sudden step in power after that. More linear is what I'm after.

They said to keep the stock main, but change the pilot. They gave me sizes. Also, they said to shim the needle. I went with 2 shims and a 45 pilot. (I believe stock is a 42?) Turned the air out to 4 turns.
(it was set at two turns out)

Backfiring gone and the bike runs strong but still has a big power shot
step up after a flat spot in the mid. But overall its about 50% better.

A new problem is that it won't idle well and is loading up at idle.

To cure this I will try to turn air screw back in from 4 out to 1 turn out and add another shim to needle. I'm using the stock needle.

The Factory said if I want economy I should leave the airbox alone.
They said the Pilot is the most important to solve problems. I also
drilled a small hole in the slide. This MAY have been a mistake.

Any thoughts on jetting a DR650 for sea level in this configuration?

Last week I received the Marving exhaust I ordered for my DR.



This exhaust is lighter than the stock one, completely legal and even more silent than the original one the bike came with (I admit, the stock one had been tampered with). The typical wet-fart sound is gone. just a nice low brummmm.

Next I wanted to know how heavy the bike really was. Filled the stock tank completely up and left the very solid homemade bashplate on as well as the toolkit, and the extra tools I carry to fix a flat (2 tire irons, pump, digital pressure gauge). I can't get her heavier than 161 kgs (355 lbs).

I'll post some pictures next week, we're going on an allroad camping riding drinking trip this weekend.

Nope, that is definitely Australia.
Take a look at the tree in the right top corner. See how the bark has been stripped from it?
Well, that was done by a Drop Bear in a mating frenzy.
Some people think that mature trees simply drop dead losing all their bark but those of us in the know can recognise the cause of the damage.

Well, I think you're off a bit on the jetting. Through my own experience and what I've gleaned from the Yahoo DR650 site, if you want to improve the stock lean condition, get a little better performance and maintain good fuel economy, you do the following:

1. Drill out the brass plug covering the pilot screw, turn the screw all the way in, (gently), and back it out 1.5-2 turns.

2. Shim the needle using (1) #8-10 machine washer.

That's it and it helps a lot. However, you have an aftermarket exhaust, so I'm not sure what that will do to the carburetion. Since it will allow more airflow at higher RPM's, I'm guessing that a larger main jet will be necessary to get the full benefit of the free-flowing pipe.

I'm almost certain that going to a bigger pilot jet is not only unecessary, but a mistake, as evidenced by the poor running at idle.

You probably should talk to Jessie at http://www.kientech.com/ , since he sell the pipe you have and he's a DR GURU.

Good luck and please report back on what works.
