Vegas to Reno - One Rider - Many Passengers

Hello Fellow ADVRIDERS,

My screen name is Surfphoto but my real name is Les Walker. I’ve been an avid member of ADVRIDERS for two years and a lurker for more! You may have seen a few of my posts regarding off-road racing and the like. This year I’m racing in the Best in The Desert series and have already had a few mishaps. Thanks to some luck, and a great pit crew "hidesertbomber", I’m currently ranked 3rd in the Ironman expert division. During my last race I injured my right foot pretty badly. It will take some time in rehab to get back to race readiness. Still, I was lucky enough finish. You can read the story if you like at www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135190.

This latest injury got me thinking, as I was hobbling around my home on one foot, how do riders who go out and ride hard but crash and injure themselves survive the hardships of missing work, or pay those hospital and doctor bills? And what about the hardships it brings their families? I know most of us run a tight ship and a week away from work can bring the whole ride to a grinding halt. Well there is hope and help for a rider down, and it’s at www.RiderDown.org. Please read their mission statement below!

I’ve talked with the folks over at www.RiderDown.org, and their hearts, minds and wallets are in the right place, which convinced me that I needed to join them in helping out our fellow downed off-road riders! This is the idea I came up with, and I hope you can help, too.

I plan to race the Best in the Desert 2006 Vegas to Reno on August 25th. There’s no other race in the United States that compares to it—more than 600 miles of off-road racing adventure! To raise money for www.RiderDown.org, I am offering up sticker space on my bike for your screen name. For a $25 donation to www.RiderDown.org, I will put a sticker with your screen name on my bike and you can ride vicariously through the Nevada Desert with me. And the bonus is that I will be wearing a tracking system so you can follow my progress online via a satellite hookup! It will be through the Best in the Desert web site come race day at www.bitd.com.

August 24, "25 race day", 26, 2006

So imagine your average KTM race ready 525 all sticker’ed up with the likes NEDURO, NIGHT FLUG, INTE, MOTO MIKE, CRAIGINCALI or TREY650 ect..

Example:
a. Normal race bike,

b. Race bike with some ADVRIDER attitude!

The cool thing is that I would not be racing the longest off-road race in America alone but would have all of you on board with me. What a great feeling it will be to know that we are helping out some of the less fortunate members of our brotherhood. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
“Surfphoto” Les Walker

p.s: I will be updating this thread and showing my progress in prep for the race with photos and commentary, so keep checking back. Plus, I will be doing photos of the names on the bike so you can see where you’re riding at, too

To donate: please go to http://www.paypal.com and send money to donate@riderdown.org
Don't foget to mention Vegas to Reno ride or Surfphoto in the comment area so RiderDown will get me your name!

And I want you to know, no money at all goes to me in any way, shape or form, it all goes to RiderDown, someday you might need them!

Attention: Just donated by kdxkawboy a 1977 TT500 4/14/06

For each person that donates $25,to Surfphoto's - RiderDown effort they will have a chance to win a damn near pristine '77 TT500. Its a title bike with a '77 vintage GYT D/S kit with an added Hodaka tool box mounted to the rear fender loop. I picked it up for song years ago, got it running and never finished the project so it has sat for 6 years. The only blem on the bike is a quarter size ding in the back of the tank that is so like a hail stone ding you should be able to pull it out with dry ice... Thanks kdxkawboy!!
At the finish in Reno "probably the day after the finish Kdzkawboy and I will draw a name out of his Kawboy hat"
"I will work out delivery somehow, I love a good road trip"

AMOS, I hope so too! It would be cool for me know, that when it is getting tough for me in the last 100 miles or so, I can look down and see your name on my bike and hear your voice!!" get er done!!"

Look for photos of prep and traing coming soon, I hope a Mod can make this thread Sticky!

This is a good idea...I race ATVs and right now just recovering from rotator cuff surgery. I have been banged up a few times and I'm lucky enough I work in an office so I can go in bandaged up...sometimes I take a half day sick leave or plan an extra day of vacation if I know I'm going to be sore or tired...

will probally not contribute but Trey650 will throw his $25 in. I'll double it if you don't crash(that's an easy bet)

Hell, I haven't been able to do a 360 for about 20 years. That's what happens when you switch to a longer board.

Hey Guys, on behalf of everyone at the RiderDown Foundation as well as injured dirt bikers everywhere - THANK YOU!!! We are continually amazed at the support & generosity of our community. Without support from people like you we wouldn't be able to provide much assistance to those who crash! Our operation is 100% Non-Profit (yes we are a 501(c)3 Tax Exempt Charity) and is completely volunteer based. To learn more about RiderDown check out www.riderdown.org, while you're there click the Launch Forum button & take a minute to register and say hello. The more members we get registered on the site the more respect, recognition & hopefully funding we can get from Corporate America.

Surfphoto - I have to give you credit for coming up with a great idea! This is going to be so cool to be able to ride with you across the desert and be a backseat driver second guessing all your moves! The Tracking system allowing us to chart your progress from the comfort of our homes is pretty neat - we definitely don't want to see any 10G impact signals!!

Ride ON & stay safe!

BV

We've shared a few PMs so you know I'm up to help with your pits in the northern half of the race. Tell you what I'll do to kick in a little extra. For each person that sponsers you for $25, they will have a chance to win a damn near pristine '77 TT500. Its a title bike with a '77 vintage GYT D/S kit with an added Hodaka tool box mounted to the rear fender loop. The only blem on the bike is a quarter size ding in the back of the tank that is so like a hail stone ding you should be able to pull it out with dry ice. I need to clear up some garage space so this works for me. At the end of the race you'll have the honor to draw the winner from a hat.
