hmmm....this from the pbase front page:

Free unlimited hosting cannot continue.
In order to provide fast reliable service to those who have paid, pbase will soon charge to host your photos.
Your donations have helped much and are the reason the servers and network connection have been upgraded over the last year. Thank you!!
However, the cost of hardware and bandwidth is still much higher than the donations can pay for.
Thanks to Springboard Hosting for their tolerance of the heavy bandwidth usage by pbase.

This change will occur soon and will make pbase fast, reliable, and self-sustainable financially.
When this happens, people who have already contributed from the support page will continue to have at least the service you have now for the following year.
Other people will have time to decide if you find this site valuable or not.
Some of the details are not yet known, but I wanted to mention this in advance so it doesn't come as a surprise. -slug

Shit. The end of another cool, free thing on the web. Before long, everything will be "pay up or die"...

I just got the same thing from my fax service; efax. I get maybe one fax every two months - so paying $7.95/mo doesn't make a lot of sense for me. Efax has been great. So, I get this fax yesterday telling me to switch over to their pay plan or they'll sell my name to junk mailers to re-coup their costs. Bastards.

Next thing you know, Baldy is going to start charging per post and per character - then fish'll really be up shit creek!

I've had no problems acessing the site, but I guess I will have to backup all the photos I have there just to make sure I have them locally.

Yes it is nice to have them there, but the fact that it is a pain to link to the image when I want to, the fact that it can be slow and quirky, and the fact that if I am going to pay for hosting, then I am going to host them on my own website, means I will not be paying PBase anything.

PBase is okay, but like I said, just hosting photos is not enough of a service differentiation from me hosting my own photos.
