West Virginia DS Camping Weekend

This is going to be a cooperative tale that will have to be told by the many who braved the woods, the weather, and the unpaved roads of northeastern West Virginia over Mother's Day weekend. Yes, that's right, Mother's Day weekend. That alone should tell you that these guys were not your ordinary ADVriders. Add to that fact the weather was predicted to be rain all weekend, the rally was held at an austere campsite 20 miles from the closest paved road, and the lows were to be in the high 30's at night..... hell I'm surprised that anyone showed up. As it was, 17 stout men packed their camping gear and vittles, and sallied forth from the likes of Texas, New Jersey, Pennsyltucky, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia, to meet at the Laurel Fork Campground, deep in the heart of the Monongahela National Forest.

Trailace rode over with me from Virginia (from Texas, by way of Boston), and Sherpa and cliffhanger were there when we arrived. The others trickled in over Thursday and Friday, and included: raysuf, Ooops409, GSaar, becoyote, AndyB, GSteve, chickt, Tibi, Vincent_4466, disconnected, ADVridgerunner, onaXR, moymurfs, and Tberlin.

Before I go any further, I would be remiss if I didn't thank Cliffhanger up front. He lives near Canaan valley and took the time to drive down, snag some tent sites, set up a tarp for a rain porch, and drop off a truckload of wood. Man did that make arriving at the campground nice after riding the last two hours in the rain to get there. Thanks Neal!

The assembled DS bikes were quite a varied collection. Several KTMs, an XR, several Wee-Stroms, and numerous GS's. We even had one experimental nuclear powered GS. I think it was visible from the orbiting space station.....

The food was as good as you wished it to be, or only as good as you brought. No restaurants here. But GSaar brought an incredible tripod grill that is a tradition in the Saarland of Germany, so fire roasted meat was available.

It even tasted better than it looked..... and after a long day of riding it was perfect.

Each day the riders split off into groups by experience and level of risk desired, and each group was led by someone with local knowldge. Norm (Vincent_4466) led the advanced group of KTMs and the XR, Neal led the middle group, and I led the laid-back group. Since everyone went out on their own, this is where they'll all have to jump in and post their own ride portion and pictures. Becoyote and I have quite a few from our respective rides, which I'll be posting shortly.

Okay guys, now is your chance..... post 'em if you've got 'em.

I got soaked on the way down from NJ

and the night got a bit chilly. Here's the gang on Friday morning:

The tripod-grill passing the German safety inspection:

Trailace on what might be his next bike:

My ride home was pretty uneventful. Leaving WV on Sunday morning always has something eerie, too me. Riding at 3000+ft on Rt.93 through the Allegheny Mountains, with the Gerbings turned up and listening to some backpipes is awesome. This is Mt.Storm Lake, which steams because it's water is used by the nearby Power Station for cooling.

Hope to see everybody again! Ride safe,
Rudy

More pics with a caption contest.....

I'm just going to throw these up here, so the guilty can be known. I'll also buy beer for the funny caption contest, no limit on entries...

Here comes Jeff, last and lost again.....

Here is where everyone goes to get high in West Virginia.....

Real men don't need no stinkin' Helen Two Wheels bags.....

DO NOT TRY TO FOLLOW THIS GUY (Norm)

Unless you are on one of these.......

Or one of these....... gawd, this is the definition of micro camping.....

Okay, if the old quote is, "The louder the pipe, the smaller the penis....." can that be applied to saddle bags too?

I have no idea what they were talking about, but it looked like fun.....

You make up the story on this conversation......

Cruising thru the green, green valleys....

Coming down this old, washed-out road was easier than riding back up it......

We've all heard of the incredible skill, rock-solid nerves, and totally focused dedication to the Blue Angles leader when flying in formation at 650 mph with wingtips only only inches apart...... and if the leader takes the loop too wide, the entire group follows them into the ground.......

Click on this link to see the video of the extraction of the nuclear fusion bike and to smell the clutch cooking......

I've got a million of them........ will try to post more later. Must get back to work.
