I don't know what distances your planning on doing, but anything over a camelback and the weight really wears you down fast. I would look into soft panniers or something first.

Dana Design packs have the best suspension on the market for distributing a load. Their "Bomb" pack is a staple in their line and can carry a decent load.
How many days supplies will you be hauling in terms of food and amount of clothing? If all your packing is minimal clothes, tent, and food for a weekend the bomb pack may be overkill. I would recommend trying some packs on in a hiking store to determine what size and capacity you would need. I think 1500-2000 cubic inches would work fine. However I would also not want to have to tackle 80 miles of sand whoops with a heavy pack. Good luck.

chunky monkey
The guy that started Dana Designs left and started Mystery Ranch. I have the Funky Monkey, I don't have a link for you, sorry. But, It is the best quality, well thought out 2k cu/in, with an pocket for up to 3 liters of water bag I've ever owned. The bag is the only one I've ever seen that has a truly adjustable hip belt. I have done hundreds of miles with this on my bicycle and never felt chafed, it really wicks away the sweat. Good luck on your journey!

Thanks for the link Cool ish.
The most important thing when choosing a pack is fit and comfort. My mountaineering and skiing packs are all Dana Design built (before he sold out, thanks for clarifying). If you're offroading with it then you'll place even more of a stress on the suspension system of the pack. I've climbed w/ a few packs but none have matched the Dana designed for comfort. Take a look at the link to Mystery Ranch packs. Yuor pack has the ability for a custom fit w/their system. Most other pack manufacturers don't design this their product. Good luck.

Go to blackhawk.com...pick ANY backpack. I guarantee any one of them will stand up to whatever torture you can think of down in baja!! I've done it!!

I have heard good things about Kifaru Military packs. The Express or Marauder look to be good options for riding. I am looking to get one soon, and wish I had one on my last Baja adventure.
