Long time Lurker - first post - going to the Yukon

Hi all I have enjoyed the site as a lurker for a while now, thought I should register say hello and post some pics of my area, as requested (sounded more like a requirment) when I registered. I live in the kootenay's of British Coulumbia and will be heading North to Dawson and the top of the world hwy. on June 16th. I would like to continue north but with only 2 weeks availabel I don't think I will have time Any info or advice on the Dawson - Alaska portion is greatly appreciated.
Ride Well

Welcome to the asylum! Great pix you posted there!

As for suggestions on where to ride and what to see in two weeks... I have not done any rides up to the Dawson area. My first trip in that direction starts in 9 days. However, many riders round these parts have, and I am sure they will offer up some ideas here in a few... Many of us will be in Dawson 15th-17th, so who knows..?

2 weeks is plenty of time to go farther than Dawson. I was in Dawson in 3 days from the Okanagan, about the same amount of time it should take you if you ride the Alaska Highway on the way up.

If you like gravel a trip up the Dempster to Inuvik and back to Dawson should take about 2-3 days depending on the weather.

You must see the Denali Highway between Paxson and Cantwell.

The Cassiar, Highway 37 is very scenic and a side trip into Hyder is a must do.

These could all be fit into a 2 week ride including a couple of days off the bike to wait for the rain to stop.

Just keep going until your trip's a little more that half gone... then turn around and pick up the pace.

Welcome to the fort.

Yah I sort of figured I had lots of time but last years ride was to Colorado 5000Km's in 6 days, this did not leave much time for poking around so I want to take my time this year. I am riding out of BC to Clagary on Fri. night to hook up with a friend who will probably come to Dawson with me then he may have to go back to work. I suspect we will make Burns lake or Smithers the first night, then I must go to Hyder :) then on to Dawson. My niece worked in Dawson for the Vet and the local newspaper so I have instuctions to say hello to some folks for her (not sure where that will lead). Then ride the top of the world Hwy and if the weather is good might take a scoot up to Prudohe Bay, if the weather sucks I might just do as you suggest and head over #8, dunno. I will camp most of the way and hotel when I must ( 2 kids in college and another next year $$$) hope to see some of you folks on the road. I will be riding my black DL1000 and may be accompanied by a crazy bast&rd on an FZR1000 who says he wants to get a pic of it at Prudohe Bay (if he doesn't have to back to work). the count down begins

You need to pull a couple of IB days and get to Dawson for the 15 and 16th.
Catch Hyder on the return trip.

Give your Supervisor's phone number. You have the flu. I can verify it.

Dawson

Definitely stay or eat at the downtown hotel in Dawson. Owned and run by long time rider (1150GS) Dick van Nostrand. Good food, good rooms.

If you can go via Cassiar, it is a much more interesting ride than most of the Alaska hiway. More wildlife. Less traffic, though the truckers like it because it saves them gas. Very buggy.

Dempster is a great ride, but if it rains, stop at a campground. The road gets very greasy when wet - drains quickly, but it sucks to ride wet.

Bring a tire plugging kit and pump, particularly if you ride the Dempster. Shale is sharp.

And if you can make it over to Alaska and ride the Denali hiway (as suggested in an earlier post) it is well worth it.

(Tried posting some more pics, but can't get them to fit the size limits)

WOOO HOOO I couldn't wait until Saturday to leave so I took Fri. off and will be heading to the Yukon and Alaska a day sooner. So if any of you locals see a black V-Strom w/ BC plates and a rider that is sort of looking lost and hungry don't be afraid to stop say hello and point me north for the first week then south the last week in June.
Cheers
Ride Well
