Pinging cured!

Bought my '04 1150 GS 3 yr ago. Each of the last 2 summers were associated with a transient, but marked pinging when it was very hot (>90 degrees F) and I accelerated hard while running engine at lower rpms (<3500) in 5th or 6th gear. I could not attribute this to carbon build up unless it was assembled at the factory with pre-carbonated heads. I tried all the fuel additives with no resolution of pinging. While reading the threads on cam chain tensioner upgrade at least 2 people posted having cured the pinging with the newer version of the left sided cam chain tensioner. So I figured I'd give it a try. I just got back from an 800 mile ride in 2 days, one of which was done in the mid 90's (one bank display indicated 96 degrees). I noticed zero pinging at >4000 rpms so I progressively dropped rpms while in 5th and 6th gears then hit the throttle. None at 3500 and none at 3000! I could not make the bike ping!!! (In fairness I recently had done my own 12K service and swithched to synthetics. The 600 mile and 6K services were done by certified BMW mechanics.)

Nice.

Yep, I can't believe the floopy cam chain damping system in that engine. The cam chains are never tight. And the cams are never synched with each other, or the crankshaft.

Replacing the left damper greatly improves the cam-to-cam synch.

But the precarious throttle body-cam-crank synch slips away again as the oil ages.

These engines could really benefit from 3 fixed-position, manually-adjusted, mechanical tensioners. Instead of the 3 wonky motor-oil-filled dampers.

You think it's good now DOC, imagine mechanical tensioners.

Recall hell - at the very least tell the dealers about it, my dealer had not even heard about it until I came in with the part numbers. They were skeptical but are now believers! It made a world of difference on my 1100.

Now I can justify this expense! I have been wanting the new cam chain tensioner, but was being a cheap ass. Now that I know that it solves more that just excess noise it will be ordered!

From what I have read here I wonder if many a poor running GS and R bike may be suffering from this very problem...(poor idle, noisy and vibes at idle, vibes at speed, etc)

Too many times we hear from the dealer "they all sound like that" or ACCEPTABLE is on the service sheet. I'm going to check the left one on my RT at 42K.

For those of us with incompetent parts guys...

Hey PetDoc,

Would you mind posting the part numbers for the magic cure? My parts guy looks at me like I have 3 heads and 1 eye.

Thanks!

See they don't have a clue - at least my dealer was curious about the new parts.

Mine still pings in the same hot situations. "02 1150, 50k miles, did the LH tentioner upgrade, water tortured, Sea Foam tortured, etc. I'm out of ideas besides retarding the timing which I am about to do. Can't fix the crappy California blended gas
