a few pics from our weekend sailing on Lake Michigan

just thought I'd share with any of YFFs that even care anymore

Shelly and I had a great getaway weekend on the boat...

weather was calm...too calm to sail..and chilly...like high 30s at night..but none the less we left...the 2 of us...

anyway...pic share....Shelly muggin up after our 5 am departure to cross lake michigan....

100 nm to destination (anchorage spot in the natural cove of South Manitou Island)...a 38,000 acre island in the north half of Lake Michigan...a good time of year to go...nobody else is out there

Lake michigan can be brutal....but of the 30+ times I have sailed across it...the conditions in the middle are dead calm....we like this when you do not see land or any other boats for many many hours....
bow

looking aft...

this pic shows the lack of horizon.....the 2 fluids we live in seemingly become one

once an awhile you come across a freighter in the shipping lanes...I ponder what the crew's life aboard is like

we make it to the cove and set a few anchors......drink some wine and grill a steak dinner.....and enjoy the solitude....

up with the sun.....a good spot to watch the show...

we pack up a lunch and some gear and head ashore for a good hike....South Manitou Island has some diverse ecosystems....500+ year old cedar groves (ponder the harsh winters they survived)....some great wind whipped sand dunes stacked 400 feet high ....some old prairies that were once great farms of a few island inhabitants....the farms grew excellent seed stock of barley and such...the island is isolated from mainland pollens, so they could keep quality up...

the old school house

afetr about 5 miles of hike...we get over to the southwest end of the island and the great dunes....

this is a magical place.....with interesting hardy life....

the pics does not show the steepness of this sand hill...350-400 feet aboe the water here...

this looks like a good spot to have some lunch...BTW...is there other people on this planet?

the north winds off Lake MI are a bit chilly... ...time to head into the cedars

they call this area on the island "Valley fo the Giants"....the story is....they used to have steamer ships come into the natural cove...it is really deep 90 feet and you can get within 200 feet of shore in deep enought water...they would send teams of horses ashore to cut wood to fuel the steamships....these white cedars were spared...the bark was so impregnated with sand that is dulled the saws too much.....so they live...and many are over 500 yrs old....gnarly trees...

sadly, this was my favorite tree, that had picked a great spot to live...our last visit here 2 years ago, we found it was blown over...

we hoof it back to the boat......a nice 10 mile hike....worked up a thirst... ....we decide to spend another night swinging on the hook since nobody else is around to bother us....may as well feed a few gulls...

ahh another great dinner of tuna steaks and wine...and a good hike...off to slumber....

we wake up and make a breakfast....eggs sailboat style....

and we head over to Leland for a Wine and food festival...

I gotta get Shelly to upload the pics from her camera....but we docked in Leland Michigan...enjoyed the wine festival....and shoved of at 6 am...and it was glass like AGAIN ....motored 100 nm back to Manitowoc...at 7 mph....burining 1/2 gallon an hour of diesel....playing cards and reading books and napping....and arrived at 9:30 pm...15.5 hrs... ..but nowhere I;d rather be...and just the 2 of us...
