Drunk Uncle is here and yes that is my old bike. Unless the current owner messed it up, that is one hot BRP.

Had to look up BRP :) Since you've owned both the XR and a KLR, could you give a brief summary of which you prefer and why?

I remember you running down the impressive list of mods on that bike when you rode it on D2D and IIRC it has a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Since it's air cooled (runs hotter), can it run 87 octane without pinging?

Well it actually runs cool in Alaska. Before I dropped the thermometer dip stick it would barely hit 200 degrees. I had it bored to 657cc, 9.5 to 1 compresion, intake and exhuast ported/polished, HRC cam, NX650 Dominator 2nd gear, Jet Hot coated head pipe, GSMark oil cooler, Wolfman racks and lot of other stuff PO did. The Cycle Wizard makes his own pistons and puts squish on the piston that acts as mechanical octane. So with the squish and oil cooler it run cool. I set it up living in Misssouri with 90 degree summers.

In the woods the XR kicked ass, but on the highway the KLR is nicer. The XR had no wind protection and not as smooth as the KLR.

Rode my old WarPig '04 XRL for many years and many miles. Put a big goofy windscreen on it and rode it to Inuvik with a buddy who was on a KLR. Biggest differences were the KLR had a nice saddle vs the XRL's 2x6. The XRL had much better torque and suspension. KLR got better gas mileage. Otherwise both were fine on the highway. If you like to occassionally pound the crap out of a DS off road at higher speeds, I liked the XRL. The KLR is much better at distance.
