Hey Woody, If an silver EXCEL rim has no stamped lettering or numbering on it - what can this tell one?? I would have thought all Excel rims should have model numbers stamped into them.

how to tell your excel rims apart

FYI,,,well that is really odd,,most every rim has at least the width x diameter and ususall the date of manufacture....

it could be a generic rim used by an oem bike builder for off road use... the DOT usually demands the above info size n date

single signature excels are found on oem bikes,,the double signature stuff and the A-60 line are aftermarket extra song 7000 series rims.

the aftermarket rims pre-drilled for certain model bikes will usually have a code on them... the rims that Buchanans and several other wheel builders sell only have the size stamped on them because they arrive undrilled/punched and we custom drill them for the application ,,, lace patterns and nipple sizes we choose.

Greetings Woody,
Have you made any progress towards using Excel tubeless spoke rims (like on the Moto Morini Granpasso) on the KTM 950/990s?

Woody,

I have a stock set of 95 R1100GS wheels that I would like to have woodified? and had some questions and would also like to get some pricing.

I read somewhere that when you rebuild the GS wheels you replace the spokes with some beefed up stainless ones, but for the life of me I can't find it again, could you give me some info on them?

What I would like done to my rims is basically a good once over, I don't think there are any serious issues with them. What kind of money are we talking to get the wheels looking like new again, powder coated outer rims (black), powder coated hubs (black) and new spokes (stainless or whatever)?

Do I ship them without the brake rotors? are there any special things to do when shipping the rims? What do you recommend for packaging to get them out to you?

I would like to get these out to you within the next week, what kind of turnaround am I looking at?

Lot of questions there, so a preemptive thanks for answering!

hi well i've got the art of sealing them down really good,,i've added a few twists to some fairly reliable techniques that pre-empt the finish sealers from pushing through the nipple...haven't had any issues since i've adopted it...we have traced down that 99% of the problems were tiny pinholes developed from the air pushing through the sealants that didn't have enough cure time on them

those look like alpina's system that i wrote about several years ago,,,i will make one more attempt to do business with them,,,wish me well.,,woody

total restoration and upgrade on R1100 GS X-lace tubeless wheels

I read somewhere that when you rebuild the GS wheels you replace the spokes with some beefed up stainless ones, but for the life of me I can't find it again, could you give me some info on them? they are talking about the super heavy duty 8g ss spokes & nipple kits we have made circa $160/kit we have to redrill and countersink your rim $60 ea and the X-lace n true is $150,,add to that the time it takes to unlace and prep circa $30 if it's easy you and your rusted chrome spokes are imbedded in the rim takes closer to $90 to undo and prep,,[sometimes it takes even longer but we'll either scrap the rim or limit it to $90

What I would like done to my rims is basically a good once over, I don't think there are any serious issues with them. What kind of money are we talking to get the wheels looking like new again, powder coated outer rims (black),circa $75 ea powder coated hubs (black)circa $100 to media blast and powdercoat plus $20 to R&R front bearings ,,,,,we can do a nice job prepping/primer and paint the hubs for circa $50-60 each insteadand new spokes (stainless or whatever)?if you are not going across Siberia with real heavy loads then the newer oem ss spokes and upgraded powderoated nipples for $200 with new grubscrews work just fine..OBTW we have really good reconditioned /polished take offs that will save ya some $$$

Do I ship them without the brake rotors?if you send with we'll recondition those too so it all looks perfect again $60/pr

are there any special things to do when shipping the rims? What do you recommend for packaging to get them out to you?YES pack them in tight fitting individual boxes and throw some extar cardborad on the sides to protect the discs as wll as extar on the flat sides to protect lips of rim,,actuall sending with tires on is the ultimate protection,,we can do the R&R and balance too

I would like to get these out to you within the next week, what kind of turnaround am I looking at?about a week -10 days

Lot of questions there, so a preemptive thanks for answering!
thanks

Eek Rim Leak thru spokes R1150GS

Woody thanks for the offer to send it in but not an option for me from regional Australia. Considering fixing thr issue in the short term by fitting a tube, but have received some feedback that the 2000 model GS1150 (non adventurer) is not set up to take a tube, rim design not suitable and would be extremely unsafe to ride.

What do you think about fitting a tube to this rim, Do you agree? and if there is what ? is the difference between adventurer rim and a standard 1150GS

Awesome, thanks for the response. So what I am looking at then is:

Rim Powder Coat - 75
Hub Powder Coat - 100
R&R Bearings - 20
Upgraded OEM spokes - 200 (How much could I save getting reconditioned?)
Reconditioned Brake rotors - 60

There is a lacing cost in there too right? Trying to estimate what my total is gonna be for both wheels so I can brace the wife.

'gday mate

i see no reason why a tube would not be do-able...i would use a heavy duty version,,,and use tire talc od baby powder to minimize friction ,,,remove the metal or rubber valve stem and you are good to go...

may i suggest that before you do that,,that you break the bead on the side where the air is leaking through ,,clean the area thoroughly and see if you can find a crack or evidence where the leak is being generated,,,then apply some silicone-seal or this product called goop in the entire bead area,,,let it set up and cure for a day and then pop the tire on and check for leaks

Ha! Yeah that would make sense. Well since I don't have a check book and use my debit card for everything, I will just put my contact info in and you can call me when it's ready to ship and we can finalize the payment then if that works?

I got the wheels off tonight and somehow managed to get a little carried away! Just need to find a bead breaker to get these tires off and I will be throwing them out your way!
