Hillbillies Head West............

We left Weaverville NC after a nice breakfast at Waffle House. You people out West have no idea what you missing. I didn't see a Waffle House past St. Louis.

My self and KennyaNC ready to hit the road Sunday June the 25th.

I had a sales meeting on Monday in Louisville KY so we stayed there Sunday night. Kenny headed out atthe crack of dawn on Monday morning and I had to make the time up Monday night after the meeting. We met in Kansas City ar Rosh44's house. Dick and his son-in-law Chris were going to CO to meet a friend and ride forthe week. Dick was kind enough to load our bikes in his trailer and take us accross Kansas.

Rosh44 aka Dick

Let me say a few things about Dick. People tell me he is a hell of a nice guy when he's sober, I'm sorry to say I never met that side of him.

This is Chris

If you buy anything electric with out first asking Chris you will be making a mistake. Very smat guy.

We get dropped off in Limon CO and make our way down to Haydukes in Salida. Duke was nice enough tolet us store our camping gear there so we could ride some rough roads for a few days.

On the way down to Haydukes Kenny gets a bee in his jacket.

Kenny tells me if it's a hunny bee we could be in trouble. Thank god all the paramedic trainning comes back. I throw kenny a rag and tell him to piss on it and hold it over the sting. He did

Looking atthe Rockies getting bigger as we get closer.

This is what we came for!

A nice road on the way to Salida

End of day one in CO

Kenny should be jumping in here anytime with pics and stuff as well.

Nice report so far.. hurry up and get to the little altercation with the law..

Day 2.

Salida to Old Monarch Pass to Hot Springs to Pitkin to Tincup.

I think Kenny tired to kill me. I can't prove it but he took me and the new GS over some damn tough roads for the first three days.

This is the sign on the nice paved part I didn't get to ride because Kenny found the old dirt pass.

But the views were worth it.

Kenny tearing up the dirt road on his KLR

Earily in our ride I thought Kenny was a good dirt rider, later when the roads got really bad I found out he was a great dirt rider. He's got really good vision and always takes the perfect line. The best I can do is try and keep up and follow his line.

A new friend at a cattle crossing, pops up to see what we are doing.

There is one in Colorado

I know what Waffle House's are, and we do have one on the east side of Denver in Aurora, although it is quite a ride for me just to have breakfast when we have the Turntable only two miles away.

When NCbub says hillbilly he isn't kidding. He told me he thought "Deliverance" was a love story.

We ride from daylight to dark. When we get to a hotel I passout on the bed. Kenny stays up for a couple more hours looking for more dirt roads. He found Powderhorn.

Great road. Hard to ride because of all the beauty.

Note no guard rails. I didn't see alot of those in CO. Don't mess up or it's a long ride down.

Next was Engineer Pass. Holy S**T what a road. If anyone rode it I hope you saw the big FYYFF I put in the snow at the top.

An old mine at the foot of the pass

Heading up to the top. I should have known something was up with all the motocross bikes comming down looking at me that "he's not going to ride that up there is he" look.

up was fun, down was another story

There's a good redneck name for them damned rocks stickin up out of the roads, but most of them folks in Colorado didn't like it. So I won't say it.

I'm a little late but I finally showed up.

After breaking camp at our spot in Louisville...

I left Dewayne at his meeting and headed to KC to see Rous44. It would be great to see him again. We met in Creel last year and after some arm twisting he convinced me to rent a KLR and ride down to Batopilas. I owe him big-time for that. It was the highlight of the trip for me.

I stopped at a rest area in Missouri and met this guy.

His name is Ralph Jones and he is from Birmingham, Alabama. He was riding this 250 Honda Helux to Colorado Springs. He is retired and drives a school bus so he needs to be back in Birmingham by the middle of August. He is going to spend the next couple of months touring CO on this thing. He is a braver man than I am.

Dewayne originally wanted to ride all the way to CO I coaxed him into the trailer for the trip across Kansas.

After seeing some of the storms on the plains I don't think he minded too bad.

He got caught up on his sleep a little also Sounded kinda like my Stihl 026

Dick dropped us off in Limon and we loaded up and headed for the hills.

Sunset in Bighorn Sheep Canyon.

The next morning we left Salida after dropping our camping gear off at Haydukes house. Another great guy that I met in Creel. He had some ice cold Modelo Especial waiting for us the night before when we rolled in and also lined us up a place to stay. Thanks Duke. It was good to see you again.

We buzzed up Monarch Pass to the top and decided to do Old Monarch Pass. What a great road.

Dewayne tearing it up.

Through Waunita Hot Springs

Beautiful scenery

On into Pitkin.

Then south to Ohio City and on to Gunnison for lunch. From there we turned south on Hwy 149. We followed the law for a few miles until I had had enough and turned left at Powderhorn. What a great little valley.

When we hit the pavement again It was pouring the rain with lot's of lightning and thunder. We buzzed into Lake City for some gas and coffee. We asked about Engineer Pass and the lady behind the counter looked at us kinda funny. "You aren't going up there are you? It's probably snowing up there." Well as Dewayne said, that's like telling a rabbit to stay out of a briar patch.

No snow but beautiful views, Engineer Pass.

We got to the old ghost town of Animas Forks and poked around awhile.

I think Dewayne was getting tired of waiting on me and wanted to get back on the dirt. He had been putting that GS through the rough stuff like he had been ridding it for years and he was loving it.

We made it to Silverton about 7:30

Our digs for the night.

Day 3 next.
