Yes it's a tourist trap, but I suppose there's a lot of goings-on and some of that is worth watching. The lobster crate races are entertaining and certainly unique. If you can, get on a schooner daysail. I recommend the Simplicity (Schooner Simplicity; 274 Limerock St.; Rockland, ME_04841; Tel: 207.596.0108) They might be booked though.

Other stuff -
* nearby is the owls head transportation museum. Highly recommended.
* Second Read Bookstore makes good coffee.
* walking out on the rockland breakwater is also interesting and unique, especially at high tide. The lighthouse on the end is now open for tours.
* Camden is a short ride away, and given that it'll be busy and touristy, it's still a really nice harbor. Mt Battie (camden) is a short hike and well worth it.

Note that schooner days (1st week of sep?) is also interesting, and it's no problem trying to find a boiled lobster whenever you go. There's also the blues festival in 1.5 weeks, probably too soon for you.

If the Simplicity doesn't work out, there are other boats in Rockport and Camden that also do daysails. I'd recommend one out of camden over the rockport one, just because the scenery/route is a little more interesting.

BTW, I grew up in Rockport and I'm up there every other week in the summer...

cheers - chp
