It went pear shaped right from the start. The organizer threw a $40 prime on the first lap that made everyone jump and sprint basically the entire 1K. Add to that the fact that it was 90 degrees outside and in the lowest box you can see the elevation change. The start/finish is right after a nasty hill kicker that does not let up until halfway through the front straight. Since the course is so short, I never got to recover properly before hitting that hill over and over. It finally bested me and I just sat up off the back. I think about 1/3 of the field had dropped out before me according to my wife.

Yep, about 25 feet in 50 yards at 20+ miles an hour for 45 minutes straight. I believe the heat had more to do with my failure than the hill, but that just exacerbated the problem. My legs felt fine after the race; my lungs were searing though and my head was pounding like a bass drum.

Would these dropouts be suitable for a singlespeed conversion?

My neighbor gave me a POS mountain bike that I'm thinking of converting to a fixie, just out of curiosity.

yes, would work fine. Horizontal would be a bit better and easier to adjust chain to chosen cog size but that'll work well too.

That 45 ft over and over etc. really adds up.

During the The Tour of Missori one year ,Jonathon Vauters discovered on one stage 135miles of rollers. It didn't look bad on profile, but they looked at total climbing for the day it was somthing 13,000 ft of climbing. Some moutain stages in the Tour don't have that much climbing. The riders were saying it was one of the hardest races they'd done.

Yes that's exactly what you want Vertical dropouts present more of a problem.

Yea it looks like your HR went 0 to 170 in about 1/2 mi and then went up from there. It was hot and this the first real hot weather we've had .I remember one RR I did,I did cat 3 as training and warm up, just tucked in. Then did the age graded. The cat 3 race it was maybe 82 degrees, by the time they had the AG race it close to 98 degrees. it was hotter than hell. I over drank water and supplements. I probably drank close to 2 1/2 liters of water before the race took 2 throw away bottles in my skinsuit plus big bottles in cages. I drank the two throw aways in the first 1/2 lap (4.5 mi).
Iwas ok, but remember the heat was comming up from road.It felt like a blast furnace.

Good Luck with races tonight.

Don't spend any money on that. In order to make a fixie you will need a new wheel, new chain, cog, probably a new crank with a single speed ring.
