F1 racing is still beautiful and is simply amazing, even if there's some goofy concepts on the cars. It's the pinacle of auto racing. I would watch the real racing of F1 and Champcar before I'd waste my time watching the artificial racing/drafting on the Neck-car circuit
Two things: I'm not old, and using the words "real racing" in a sentence with "F1" is an affront to the English language.

I keep remembering F1 from the 70's through 90's. Then I turn on a modern F1, the out of control sewing machine engines and the rather ugly fins combine with lap after lap after lap of no passing follow the pole sitter around hope you get better pit stops gets boring and I change the channel. Except for the sewing machine engines it's like a NASCAR restrictor plate race.

The Gran-Am series (I think that's the one) with hoods that are propped up by the factor support arm, actual car bodies (even if they are seam welded), with BMW, M-B, Porsche, Ford, GM, etc racing actual cars available to the public with actual passing looks better every month. At least as far as watching cage closed track races. I still prefer watching cages race rallies and off road.

I likes any motorcycle racing.

To answer your question. Yes, they can get uglier. Let someone pick a fuscia, yellow, green, and blue paint scheme.

I'm still down with the engine noise (trying to be hip with my lingo to convince the kids I'm cool.)

The start and first few laps of an F1 race are great. After that,

The tracks are safer, but make for lots more boring racing. If your leader don't break the car, or screw up his pit strategy, guess what?! he's gonna win. How's that exciting?

Passing, wheel to wheel racing, and etc. all make for a better spectacle. Ultimately a spectacle is what sells advertising. Advertising $$ makes F1 go.

Thumb I like the cars!

At least they are trying new designs. Nascar has that cookie-cutter thing going on. Being one to get into the high tech stuff, I like the wind tunnel testing, traction control, launch control, etc. I beats Cleatus and Cooter throwing a big holley on top of a Chevy small block... Oh yea, I also like that they turn right as well.

The cars do look like shit, cobbled together with tiny aero aids that have been added one on top of the other until the car (and driver) can handle the speed potential. Its an unfortunate condition probably due to changing rules and huge costs in chassis design. The cars are evolving, if inelegantly.

I think that a new chassis will appear that renders the other teams obsolete, instantly. Perhaps not as radical as the Cooper/Lotus rear-engine revolution, but similar in effect. Every team will join the bandwagon, because the cleaner design will be faster (and, as a bonus, better looking too.)

Warplanes are a great example of design and function, and few warplanes (except specialized, and slower planes such as Warthogs) are ugly in the way that BMW is ugly.

Nah. The rulebook doesn't allow for innovation.

Have a look at the F1 grid, man. I don't see a wide variety of approaches out there. The rulebook fairly well designs the car for them.

Mushroom, you might be right, I don't follow F1 that closely cause it seems so...tedious. But, I hope you're wrong. Rules, and poorly written, highly restrictive rules at that, often lead to divine inspiration as designers find ingenious (and complicated) ways to bend them. Also, a better design is not necessarily a more expensive design, and if access to the better approach is widely available, F1 may just go with it. Anyway, I hope I'm right (see my avatar?) and you're wrong just for the sake of it.
