That was actually a suggestion that I had in mind. Look into getting a folding or collapsible rifle in whatever caliber will work for your needs. My AK-47 with a folding stock fits very nicely in a tennis racket bag. Not only is it easy to carry, but it doesn't telegraph to everyone that it's a rifle and you should try to steal it. I can carry it off or on the bike with our drawing attention, so I don't have to try to figure a way to secure it when I walk into a gas station to buy a Coke.

Scabbards and weapons....

Some solutions arrived at the hard way...
Horses or bikes, pretty much the same....Vertical carry, or butt fwd. carry is going to be regrtetted sooner or later.
Diagonal, muzzle fwd. and low, under your ankle if possible and butt level with underside of rear rack works.
THe shorter the rifle/shotgun the more conveniant to carry.
A 16" barrled NEF rifle is about the most conveniant rifle you can get for a scabbard carry other than than an even smaller frame similar length rifle. (Uberti "Baby" rolling block in .22 rimfire or .357 cut-down to 16" and with hte buttstock skeletonized is no heavier than a walkign stick...Sweet! :-)

Shotguns must have 18" barrel in the U.S. and rifles 16".
Canada requires longer by 2" barrels on both.
Shotgun wiht under 20 to 22" barrel will have alot of muzzle flash.
Bolt actions are longer by nature of their longer recieviers than single shots or shorter pistol cal. lever actions.

If you are willing to limit yourself to a SHORT rifle/shotgun , and a singleshot or SxS or O/U double barrel, you are going to be able find more choices on where to mount.

Another option is folding stocks like my BUtler Creek folder that has my Lothar Walther barreled 16" fluted HB 10-22 bedded into it with an added screw thru the forend into the barrel.
With stock folded and slung diagonally across my back it has surivived a couple wrecks w/O a ding. (Less than can be said for the rider....)
This is a comfortable "carry" and you could have a short zip-case over the weapon to keep dust out and so as to NOT scare the hoplophobes to where they sic the law on you for "intimidation".
Just DON'T carry with loaded magazine in the weapon unless your state specifically allows it.
A concealed carry permit is ONLY for a PISTOL in most states.

I have quiet exhausts on my machines, and a legally registered suppressor to mount on my 10-22.
(People don't make complaints about what they DON'T hear.)

I have been looking for a real rack to mount a 10.5" AR to my KLR650 (legal in my state). I haven't had much luck finding one. If I could find a locking M4 rack, I could mod it to go on the KLR. Any ideas?

This looks doable with a bracked fabricated for the back of the DR:

Here's how I did it. The Kolpin is mounted to the Gobi rack in two places, and is very secure.

Not bad, not bad. I'd just like to have a simple rack on the back, not a big case/tube hooya.

Sumping a little like this:

Here's a picture of my DR with a Kolpin rifle case bolted on the side. Used the rear footpeg bolts and grab rail bolt to mount the thing.

It's been on lots of long trips over several years.
