Shouldn't you be out in the woods somewhere waiting for the Mother Strom to beam you up?

No anger at all, I just don't understand the hostility from SOME 650 owners that have to make enemies on every V-Strom thread, is it HP envy or what is it???? I have an 05 with 38,000 kms on it, all of which have been chudder free, I keep the TB's in sync and the cables adjusted and it runs very smooth, thank you. Now go back to reading the internet blather about the 1000
and enjoy your 650 whilst I ride past you up a hill with 2 up and full of lugage.
David D
Oh and yes I have put lots of miles on both and like both I just don't understand some of you guys

Sorry for the hi-jack

Hey Freeflow she's a keeper for sure!!!

Interesting

I will be interested to find out the outcome of your inspection. Common to the V-strom is over filling of oil, which would make it smoke like you have mentioned. Hopefully this is the answer as little information about engine failures on the DL 650/ SV 650 exists, unit wise they have been very dependable. The most common failure to these is the crash damage from careless riders.

How much oil did you use and did you change the filter at the same time? What was last filter you used?

ok folks...I am not an idiot, but thanks for asking

the OIL WAS NOT OVERFILLED so stop with that bullshit right now already ....I run it and then put it on centerstand for at least 20 - 30 minutes minimum.....then check the oil....

I use castrol 20W50 on all my bikes (GS, KLRs (x2), Weestrom, Transalp, Harley)

suzuki filter (always used in the 4 oil changes this bike has had over the last 6100 miles, first oil change at 57 miles, then one at 260 miles, then etc) on last oil change at 2200 miles ago...oil always in the center of the high/low mark and filled to the book specification...what is that offhand for this bike?..I dunno, 2 weeks ago I changed the GS oil and a KLR's oil, so I don't remember the numbe roff hand, that is what they make manuals for...

after the smoking for at least 30 miles (after 120 miles into the ride at freeway speeds)..I kept an eye on the oil level, cuz it was obviously burning oil...duh...and I mean it was a cloud of smoke...bluish white smoke...you know kinda like skim milk color ...100 miles later the oil level after sitting overnight on centerstand was at the low sight glass mark...so I added 1/3 -1/2 qt for the 260 mile ride home....

I don't think that was suggested. However let us know the outcome of your inspection. I had seen a blown haed gasket on the water side do what you say, and excess oil blown into the intake trap with results like you mention. Curious thought why use 20/50 in a new liquid cooled engine in your neck of the woods, no choice with the air cooled twin I understand but the Suzuki?

I just feel it is a superior oil with less VIIs, but I could be wrong ...and the temp range is ok...let's face it, these bikes rarely see temps under 30 F (and are usually stored in heated garage)...and often see 90+....20W50 meets the suggested temp range...some winter oil changes I put in 10W40

do you feel this is doing harm?
