Translation: "We tore down the rear cylinder without authorization, so before we really get in trouble were gonna sit and wait a little bit.

I can feel it coming...this is bullshit....some please esplain it to me....loose exhaust valves (which were fine 5,000 miles ago and are known to be fine forever on these engines right?)....that'd cause smoking and oil burn of about 1/2 a qt in a few hundred miles?...right?

does this smell fishy to anyone else?....

Can't see that happening on this type of engine.
It uses a shim/bucket type system to adjust the valves.
If it used a rocker arm type of adjustment, like on my KLR250, where you use a set screw it can happen.
On a shim/bucket there is no way you can get a radical change it such
a short amount of time unless they did something totaly wrong
at the factory. Like forgot to screw down the whole cam assembly.
I have almost 30,000 miles on mine and have yet still to check the valves.
Was going to do a check on Friday but something came up again.

I can't see loose exhaust valves causing smoking besides the fact that they wouldn't have changed that quickly (and if they had, its much more likely they would have tightend up).

good luck

It does sound very fishy. That would never happen at a KTM dealer

Don't know how loose exhaust valves would require new pistons and heads.

Think maybe he means the exhaust valve stem is loose in its guide. That would make more sense as far as the oil consumption goes. But still not for the head and piston replacement.
