Well, I must know my literature better than my bikes... Hunter S Thompsonis a well-known American author, radically crazy style in his day, now sometimes called "Gonzo" journalism....

Can't help with the tankThompson, though it sure looks like Hunter S Thompson would have liked that bike... a little crazy in a very cool way...!!

BMW Cafe racer?

Ok..not quite the classic cafe bike here but trying to look a little 'cafe' ish with the tail hump treatment on the back seat and with the R90S cockpit fairing.

Thompson

A really long time ago when I thought I might be fast, found out I wasn't, I worked for a guy who raced Crossle open wheel cars, this was in the late sixties. At that time there was a road course called Thompson International. Guys raced SCCA out therre and therre were always bikes around, don't have aclue other than that. Now i know I am not fast and don't give a shit, unless you pass me.

I love that line. Think we all harbour it deep inside.

Shooting in the dark here.
But where and how that name is on the tank
I would guess that it's a suzuki dealer.
Where did you get the tank from?
Any idea to the age? Other then style?

Know what bike it came off of?

This should help you out

A quick look found no less then three different Thompson Suzuki dealers
In and around the South East

That could be an option, never thought of that, thanx. I bought the tank secondhand at classic motorcycle gathering, it was in pretty bad state and unfortunately I couldn't safe the paintjob.

@ Shmerel: They're not filters... They're velocitystacks and I bought them on ebay Germany for about 12,- euro's each, the bike runs great on them, but it will wear a bit faster. (no clue how much faster though)

This is what the bike looks like now:

Still some things left to do though.

OMG...! You couldnt "safe" the paint job? It was perfect as it was!

Really... That tank and lettering had so much character that I wouldnt have touched it for anything in the world.

Patina...! My kingdom for some genuine patina!

This is my bike as is, there will be a paintjob to go with the cafe racer parts as well. If you have any cafe parts to sell toss me a pm as well.

I can't imagine why you would change this into a cafe racer, when it's so close to being a really nice stocker.

Me? I'd clean this one up, move the front blinkers back where they belong, install new pipes and mufflers, maybe Euro bars, maybe (Definately!) a prettier seat and ride if for another decade.

Theres plenty of bikes out there that are dirt cheap and that would make great cafe bikes. Go rescue one of those!.

Yeah, go ahead, rub it in....

:)

The tank had a few small cracks and leaked quit some fuel under heavy braking. I had no option but to repair the tank and that was not possible without ruening the paintjob.
